Clutch "play"

My clutch has a free play (front to back) of about 0,6-0,7 mm. Do I have to shimm it or is it OK? I just noticed it - it's not that I have a problem with it. And if I need to shim it, should that be done to the outer screw or do I have to remove the whole cb and install the shim inside, behind the bearing?

shim it rite behind the mounting screw/nut

it needs to spin freely and have very little to no play

just a quick question , in the hpi manual it shows to put the shim in before the clutchbell is this wrong? i 've also heard you should use a shim in both places what do you suggest? reason I'm asking is I'm just about to do this as I'm upgrading clutch shoes and clutch bell

one (check manual for size, not sure )shim behind the bell in front of collett and the rest in front of cb

youll want this as tight as possible but with no binding.

thanks buddy!! its the first time i've messed with the clutch but after about a 1 1/2 gallons figured its time for new clutch shoes anyway so decided to go with a hpi vented bell and the integy alum shoes so thanks for your help!!!

I have to disagree (in my first post here, nonetheless 😉) with the consensus here about little to no clutch play.

From my experience, no axial play leads to clutch shoe top side grinding in the closed end of the clutchbell, which leads to higher clutch temperature and strain on the shoes.

Why is this? The shoes themselves are moving a little bit before they get enough grip and lock the clutch. If the bell can move along with the shoe package, the better. The shoes cant move too much anyway due to the springs holding them down with a certain force.

Never had any problems running my clutch with up to 0.5mm axial play - and my stock teflon shoes seem to last forever (still as good as new after a bit more than 2 gallons).

That said, I really cant think of any reason to have this as tight as possible. The axial play between clutchbell gear and spur gear cant be it, that doesnt matter as along as it doesnt move too close to the edge of the clutchbell gear.

Too much movement is obviously bad as well...

I had the same problem with a completely stock setup, my bell came from the factory with about 1mm of play, maybe even more. Went to the local hardware store and did this, no problems and its been about half a gallon
