breaking in D30M

I am currently in the process of breaking in my D30M and was wondering a couple things. First, I am about a gallon and a half into break in. How many tanks/gallons does this engine usually take for break in? Also, what seems to be the ideal temp for engine to run at?

First what pipe are you running ? The sts pipe is best for the dm30.. I heard the jp2 or 3 pipe was also good . I ran the sts 0403 pipe on mine

If your a gallon and a half into break in.. that thing is ready to rip .. open it up and rip up some dirt bro..

Ideal temp is like 250*

I am running a HPI ribbed pipe. I plan to try an STS pipe as soon as I get some spare money. Are the STS pipes direct bolt ons? Also thanks for the info on break in, I wanted to be sure about this one since I think I moved to quick on my K4.6.
 
My STS 30 took exactly one gallon to break in.

Have you checked to see if the mechanical pinch is gone? To do this, you remove the glow plug. If you can rotate the engine by hand with the glow plug removed - NO resistance felt at Top Dead Center - the engine is fully broken in.

My engine seems to really come alive once it gets up to 265*F. Below that, it's kinda boggy. I am still trying to find the "Sweet Spot" as far as the tune goes, though. I am running the STS 0702 pipe. I had to make a new pipe support from a wire coat hanger (!), so this pipe is not a direct bolt on.

You will also need to fool around with your clutch adjustment & transmissions shift points. You are using aluminum clutch shoes, right?

Thats next on my list of stuff to buy. right now its just the 3 shoes hpi set. Thanks for the tips!
 
I ran the stock Teflon shoes forever. you seen my video right??

On my pipe I had to grind a flat spot on the header flange b/c the header was made for a left hand exhaust. Pretty sure they have they savage headers for them now
 
well I took her out today and ran it at about 255 degrees and was finally able to get it to wheelie. Still seems to need some tuning because its not nearly as well off as my K4.6 that I had.

i didnt understand full what you said about when you can tell if your engine is broken in or not. i didnt get the rotating the engine thing.... would appreciate it if you can explain it to me since i have a DM on the way.....
 
What he is saying it to remove the glowplug then turn the flywheel and if it doesn't have any resistance at top dead center (TDC) or when the piston is at the top then it is broken in.

i have 1 more question SAVAGE 25............... i put the engine in the truck, and fire it up....every how long do i make it richer when breain it in?? i know its 1/18 of a turn each time but what I'm not sure about is what i said how long should i let engine run before i take the next step and make it 1/8 leaner (clockwise)?????

You want to lean it out in 1/18 increments but only as you run more tanks for break-in. Follow the link posted above and it should work good for you. You don't really want you temps above 275 degrees and if it bogs from a start then its rich and you want a good trail of smoke under throttle.

Follow the link and you shouldn't have any problems with break-in.
 
i followed the other thread but i didnt really undrstand, they alk about heat cycles and all that and i don't have a heat gun anyway to thats not going to work for me.

i just need to know

1. how many tanks before i start leaning the HSN for 1st time
2. how much more should i run the engine before i lean the second time.
3. 3rd time
4. 4th time
5. etc
6. i stop leaning when i c that there is no friction by piston and sleeve (break in complete).

GO crazy.
 
Its tough to break in a engine carefully without a temp gun. They usually cost only around $30. But if you must do it without the temp gun I would recommend leaning out the HSN initially about half a turn. Then run it 1/4 to 3/4 throttle for about a gallon. Then past that point usually you're safe to start tuning.
 
to monitor the temperature the engine is running at. To high of temp can damage the engine during break-in, to low and you won't break it in. it also helps with tuning because you can use it as a reference for how your engine is running. Say you know your engine runs great at 250 degrees, then you would usually try to keep the tune so it stays at around that temp.
 
i got my STS D30M engine about a week ago, i sent it to ABMods about 3-4 days ago.... I'm nervous........is it a good investement or did i make a big mistake????????? any opinions?/// please share......
 
LOL - well, my stock, unmodified D30M v2 is on it's way back to Tiawan right now ... bad one way bearing, bad front engine bearing, bad carb ... all the usual STS D30M glitches. This engine has about 1.5 ~ 1.75 gallons on it.
 
hollyMOLLY i guess i made a bad investment or wrong investment. Damn it, now I'm mad.......did the seller accept the engine back after almost 2 gallons because thats alot of tanks through it.......it could have been you who damaged the engine.....I'm not saying you damaged the engine but you used it for at least 40 tanks which is a lot..-------good luck though--------
 
I am not sure you can call it used .. more like just broke in ...

thats sucks CRUSADER . my buddy has over 6 gallons on his
 
40 tanks isn't a lot.......

I have over 5 gallons on my STS 28 and had 5 gallons on my S-25 and they are still running.
 
Adam Belvins from AB Mods just sent me an email telling me that my STS 30 is modded to perfection and broken in as well. He will ship it out tomorrow and i cant wait to START RIPPIN THROUGH MY NEW MONSTER MILL.
 
I'm not sure if thats a good or bad thing that its broken in already. If its done well it saves you alot of boring hours. But if somehow its done poorly you may have compromised your engine. Hoepfully its done right, if so thats a hell of a good deal!
