Any advice a paint noobie

I have a pretty simple paint idea. It's basically a two tone paint scheme; yellow on top and black on bottom, kind of like Tonka colors. It's gonna be on an HPI F-150 body. It's just gonna a be a body to use every day, it's not gonna be show quality or anything. I plan to use some Krylon paint cans as i don't need to get fancy. What i'm really trying to get to is, do you guys have any advice for someone who's never painted a body before.

First wash the body with dish soap and water.

you arnt going to want to use krylon. You should go to your LHS and get some Pectra spray paint as its for lexan bodys, there are other brands to.

Thanks, larsen. LHS would be local hobby store, right? Also, should i paint on the inside or the outside? I personally think the inside so i won't scratch it, but i want a second opinion. Any other advice would be welcome as well.

Yup your correct buddy. Paint the inside of the body. There is a clear sheet on the out side leave this there untill your done painting it is there to catch any overspray but please tape also. I have cut the body to fit before and after painting. Cutting before is easier because you can see what you need to remove but either way works. If you cut before make sure to mask off the holes with some masking tape just for extra security.

By the way, this is the body i plan to use. The divide between the yellow and the black will be on the crease about 3/4 of the way down the door, or on the line where the body flares out (the line that goes over the fender). I also want to paint the hood black. With this apint scheme, should i paint the yellow or the black first? I say the yellow, but, as always, i would like a second opinion. Attached are the pictures of the body from the side and a picture of the hood.

Yes these or most of these bodies are to be painted on the inside, first you will want to use 3M's Scotch brite, the maroon or gray pads to rough up the inside, use a bit of dish soap and water with it, after you get it roughed up, oh first deside if you want to have clear or pained windows, if you want them clear first mask them, then use scotch brite to rough up the rest, if you want them painted then rough them up too, if you don't the paint could chip off, it helps the paint stick better. then mask and paint, then you will want to use a coat of sealer that is nitro proof. there are lots of tips and tricks in that thread. there are other things to do depending on the paint you use, some are transparent and have to be backed with a solid color.

I am painting my first body which I have messed up terriably on so I am kind of experimenting with different things I have seen. Lets just say don't use liquid masking on parts youve already painted...

Personally I would paint the yellow first. then paint the black and coat everything with the black. Make sure you have the yellow thick enought so the black wont come threw. Also leave the window stickers on the windows untill compleatly done.

Take your time. wait between coats expecialy between colors and masking.

Ive never used scotch brite to rough up the surface and have never had an issue with paint sticking, expecially rattle can paint. I now paint with air brush.

Got another question: what would you guys use to paint a metal beadlock ring? I'm not exactly sure what I should use because I know lexan paint won't work on metal, so should I just use Krylon for the beadlock ring?

Krylon will work on the ring but if your going to use the truck no paint will hold up forever (powder coat) will last the longest

krylon's formulated for plastics, so I wouldn't use that...but since it's gonna be on your wheels, which are going to take abuse (paint scratches off pretty easily), and you can repaint them easily enough, use whatever you like...

I personally would use fine scitchbrite to scuff the inside of the body lightly...you won't see the scratches once the paint is on, and it does help the paint adhere to the body...THEN wipe it over with a 3-to-1 mix of water and denatured alcohol...mostly, have fun 🙂

hey duner are u going to bring the paint line up the fender flars or leave it like the one in the pic .IMO i think it looks better with the flars are painted the same as the bottom i did it on a f-350 body for my mt.

These guys have covered most of what I'd have told you already. Except I would back the Yellow with white as the black will darken it some. If you are not worried about that then do the Yellow then when it's dry just Blast it all black. But be sure and mark all the holes you'll need to mount, clear the head,tank fill, and aerial, on the outside of the body with a marker,BEFORE you paint, if its not already done.
