I'm just about to Trash my savage, the whole thing, I don't care how much the parts will get me on ebay id rather trash it. I have been reading and researching and trying my best to get this POS to run but i don't think its gonna happen. I have a savage 25 with a 2 spd tranny, aluminum upper and lower a arms, aluminum chassis braces and a picco .26 outlaw with a ths racing tuned pipe. I cannot get this truck to run properly for the life of me. it starts no problem, 2 pulls on the starter and it starts right up, give it gas and it cuts out, play with the throttle a bit and i can get it to run but it runs like S**T I'm at my wits end trying to figure this truck out. if anyone wants it make me an offer for money or a trade. if its too low I'm throwing it in the trash after i run it over with my real truck. I'm not even playing a little bit. this motor is the absolute worst motor ive ever encountered. I can get no information on how to reset the hsn and lsn it just doesnt work right, maybe i should go back to the revo, i had no problems with it just wanted something bigger and faster. if anyone on here has any suggestions please... I'm listening
 
I would start off by leaning the lsn and hsn about 1/8-1/2 turn and that should stop it from bogging and cutting off on you. Also have you checked your glo-plug and have you sealed the motor?
 
Me personally don't agree with just trashing it. If you don't feel like messing with it put it on ebay someone will buy it. don't blame the savage if you put a picco on it. Picco in my opinion is a pretty good engine. some time hard to tune. If you cant find something on here then it probly means no one has run that engine. But google is a life saver. A friend of mine runs a picco .28 and if he doesnt warm it up for around 10 to 20 sec then it just dies everytime he hits the gas.
 
I got the truck in exchange for my tmaxx which was running flawlessly for 2 years. now i have a big problem. I have not sealed the engine. how do i go about doing so?
 
If you run it over we want a video .. better yet hold it full throttle and see how long it lasts !!! Thank you that would be great
 
Settle down! Just saw this. I would love to help but it may take a little time. I run the F4.6 so I'm not sure about the stock needle settings. Someone on here will. Don't give up yet, the Savy is alot tougher than the Traxxas stuff, trust me! Is the motor used? May be abused and that's your problem.
 
Really tho How old is engine ?
Is it sealed?
Do you have any holes in the flue lines?
is the tank sealed ?
picco engines need to have small adjustments lean and rich in like 1/32 increments
 
hey man chill out i have a 25 and it is hard to get it tuned good ,i had the same problem when it was cold out and i got a hotter plug and then tuned it some what and it runs good now.Try that and take your time tuning and lets us know how that works out.
 
ok I wont destroy it yet. what i will do is start with manufacturers 3 1/2 turns out on the hsn and 10.5 out on the lsn and see what i can come up with. As far as how the previous 2 owners treated the motor i have no idea but its frustrating, all i want to do is bash this truck and have it shift into second. I'm running an os #8 glow plug its brand new with 20% nitro. later today I'm going to mess with it for an hour or so. i have a temp gun and just bought a gallon of nitro yesterday. ill let you guy know how i made out. i think the engine is sealed, there is some copper color hardened stuff on the screw that holds the carb in place, I'm assuming thats some sort of high temp automotive gasket material. hopefully it was sealed correctly. I will check for air leaks shortly and get back to you guys. If anyone sees this post that owns a picco .26 please help out. Picco says that my hsn after break in should be flush but thats like 10 turns out..... i could go through a half tank of gas in 3 minutes just idling. I don't know if i cant get this to work within the next couple of days I'm just gonna sell the motor and get an axial or something

can you tell me what your HSN and LSN settings are. you have the 4.6 which is also a big block that might give me a good comparison starting point.
 
Don't trash the truck, trash the Picco. When I had a Picco I wanted to trash my truck too. I few member may remember me venting in the shout box. It's a good engine but I simply didn't have the experience at the time to know how to break it in and tune it properly. Sell you're picco and get an Axial .28 it's what I run and I know you'll love it.

BTW- If I remember right the LSN of the picco is 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 turns out. HSN is flush. Those are the 2 stock settings.

hey destructive, I have a 4.6 and I'm just like you were, actually I said the same thing about running it over with my real truck! But the guys here were patient and very cool and helpful and now it is running perfect, except the half tank lean, but I'm working on that. The HSN and LSN factory settings for mine were perfectly flush with the little things the needles screw into. I don't know what they are called, but maybe that will help

I had the 26 max picco and i couldnt keep front bearings in it and that made it impossible to tune
,if you have fuel coming out the front of the engine by the fly wheel it could be that,I finally did like fx and got an axial ,prob solved.
 
wow thanks guys. I drank a few beerz and hit the street. I tore down the tranny only to see that everything was perfect. i also noticed that my spur gear was slipping and the pad on the back was torn and plastic was melted, even though i only have my slipper out 1/4 turn and it was a new spur. anyway i got the truck running fierce in first gear but when i hit the brakes and the motor drops to idle it cuts out....the engine is sealed and i think i will try that front bearing. as for the truck shifting into second.....its got me, i think ill just buy a 3 spd. thx for all your help ill get this right 1 day.
 
As far as the engine cutting out, you may need to check the linkage. I'm not sure what radio you're running but if it's an after market one you can set the end point adjustment. If not, giving it a touch more idle may help, just make sure she doesn't run away from you. I have had fun adjusting the tranny before, it is definetly a procedure requiring a fine and slow touch.
 
Good luck its sounds like your mesh is offa lil bit i would check all the screws maybe they worked loose,and if its going good in first i would lean it a tad bit more that might make it shift,an lastly you might want to do the low speed needle test,or also turn your idle screwto the right about a quarter turn maybe a lil less if it moves the truck when idling.
 
All I can say is,K4.6.Oh! Please don't destroy youre savage,o.k.,so you got a bad engine ,Destroythe engine.I saw a guy run an old .18 30 percent nitro full throttle till the mill just gave up But it was a respectable death.Once again, please doht destoy the savage.I love mine as much as my dog,you wouldnt Harm a dog would you?
 
ok i didnt read everything but if you are still having the same problems as in OP i know what will help you determine whats wrong

ur in nj so its same temp as my area and i know my wasp .26 (same engine) will not run when it is cold out right away unless i pre heat it

it would do the same thign ur describing start right up then id hit the gas and it cut out and i have the identical setup as ur engine just wasp

pre heat it and if it still does the same thing start at factory tune, and if it still does it inspect the o rings on the needles picco and orion on notorious for having damaged o rings even right from the factory i know mine did

then if it still doesnt run right seal it i know mine leaked real bad around the carb and after i did all these things the engine ran like a champ mine is on its 17th gallon and still has a tight pinch to it


i read ur posts mien didnt shift into second either so i had to do the 2 pin mod on second gear and turn the shift point really late the engine always jumped it into second no matter what

as for it not runnign still check the o rings and alsot he frotn bearing mine **** out on me durring the winter also

destructive, I had the problem with my engine cutting out when I hit the brakes also. With the lid off, radio and receiver on but the truck not running, fully apply the brakes, and look at your linkage back to the carb and see if when you apply the brakes it also pushes the carb completely closed. That is what mine was doing so I had to make a little adjustment to the linkage so that when I hit the brakes the carb needle didnt move at all. I hope you understand that, I tried to explain it the best I could.
 
Trust me, I've had many of up's and down's with my truck since I first got it.

It took me a week to get it started, and I think it was about 2 weeks before I got to drive the thing.

First I had to lean it out (LSN) and bump up the idle a bit. After I did the first tank, I found a hole in my fuel line and replaced that. Temps were in the 250+ range.
Replaced line, and tuned it a fair bit. Ran great, and now that I've studied how to tune a little bit, I think I'll be able to knock out a good tune withing minutes. Now my temps are down to 200 or so (I got away from that Blue Thunder crap, and started using sidewinder).

It takes time, but once you start analyzing things you'll get it. Just give it a little bit of time and try to keep your cool.
 
destructive, wa2ruff has your answear for the brakes killing your motor. you can also cheat by removeing your air cleaner, with your savy not running turn on your radio gear go from full thottle to full break. your carb should have atleast 2mm of opening. if not udjust your idle screw untill you do. sounds to me your gettin to much throw on the carb killin it when breaks are applyied. also if that picco is drivin u nutz i would agree with fxstrongside and try a axial .28. real easy to start, tune, and bash. good luck have a few more beerz (lord knows i do) and let the brian trust answear your question
