So my 3speed isnt getting out of 1st gear.. thing is I took apart the trans and there are no stripped teeth or metal shards in the casing everything seems fine in the 3speed... Everything worked before I switched over to the 17/47 gearing and it was just a thought but not sure.. could this be because the slipper on the spur is too lose? I tightend down to where the previous one had been tightend (so I thought) not sure if that could be the problem. Doesnt make sense to me still though seeing as I'm running the top of 1st it should be shifting.. I'm stumped.. any thoughts?

no, I didnt tune the trans. Is there somewhere I can read up on that?

The manual has a good explination on how to do it. It is on Page 33 of the XL manual. basically if you want to shift sooner you turn the adjustment screw counter clockwise, if you want to shift later turn the screw clockwise. me i left 3rd gear alone and backed out the 2nd speed screw to shift sooner...

oh ok, thought there was more to it than that.. ill just adjust then. thanks!

ok, so after I got my new clutch installed and made sure the slipper wasnt slipping I decided to adjust the trans.

I started at all standard positions, and wasnt getting a shift out of anything (ofcourse) So to start I locked 3rd gear by tightening the adjustment screw for 3rd the whole way in. I backed 2nd out 1 turn. Still no shift. Backed it out another half turn and was getting a shift very late (very top of 1st). So I turned it 1/2 turn more and now I'm not getting a shift again lol :duh:

With the trans apart I can spin the shaft the gears sit on and engage 2nd gear.. I assume that 2nd is constantly engaged now hence why its not shifting.. but why is it shifting too late then not at all after 1/2 turn?? Did I miss something when adjusting the the screws?

I considered that maybe 3rd was what was shifting very late in the RPM band and that second has always been constantly engaged since I backed out the first 1 turn, but If that be the case why would third stop shifting when I backed out second some more.... I'm stumped lol 🙁

hmmm i left 3rd gear alone... i just adjusted 2nd, maybe 1 1/8 turn out... it was shifting just fine... but then it stop, shifting then i remembered i changed the brand and heat of my glow plug. so i reset my carb back to factory settings, and retuned..it started to shift again, so I'm thinking it might be your tune. Also if my just bashing the BMX track there isnt any room to get my XL up to top speed so it doesnt shift, but if i am doing highspeed runs out in a field it shifts...

I'm doing all the trans adjustment on pavement at full speed runs. I guess its possible that the tune is bad, but its running very strong at good temps and starts easily everytime. I'm going to reset the trans to standard setting and change the shift points 1/4 turn at a time. If that doesnt work ill retune the carb. Ill let you know which one works out 🙂 thanks for the help 🙂

yeah its hard to tell what is going on sometimes, i mean my trans wouldnt shift at what i thought was a good tune, just a bump of the HSN and it started to shift just fine.
