3 speed tranny with new engine.

Is it common when going to a new engine that the shift points are no longer where they should be? I have a 3 speed tranny and just went from a K4.6 to a RB modded D30M and now the shifts seem to be right on top of each other. I assume I should just adjust my tranny to shift later?

Yep you will have to tune for different motors since different motors has different power and other stuff.

Yeah I just had lots of fun adjusting my shift points after changing to a 52t spur. The strange thing I found was that even though the sav x tranny case has 2 holes for adjusting the shift points the only way to adjust the 1st to 2nd shift point is to pull apart the gear box. Atleast with the sav x one it's only 5 screws to get into the tranny.

So we have to take it apart, make an adjustment,, put back together, then test then do it all again till it is correct?

That's what I had to do for the 1st to 2nd shift point. The 2nd to 3rd shift point screw is accessible through the hole in the case. It is possible I have an old version of the 3 speed and there is a newer version for the savage x but I haven't seen it.

No matter what version 3-speed you have, you still have to take the tranny apart to adjust the 1-2 shift point. The reason for this is because the second gear covers the clutch holder and the only way to get to it is by taking it all apart. The only way to make it easy is with the easy access tranny from the Savvy X line.

Yep it's not too difficult. 5 screws and a cir clip. Then a ball ended allen key can just squeeze into the grub screw.

Still sounds like a pain., can you test it up on blocks or dopes it have to have a load on it?

ya on my 4.1 savage x it has the three holes and u can adjust the 2 speed without taking it apart. I'm assuming they put the three holes so it was ready for a 3 speed if wanted

you can't adjust the 1st to 2nd shift while the 3 speed is in the case. new or old style. just like xtreme said. good starting point for a 3 speed is 1 1/2 turns on the 1st to 2nd shift and 5 on 3rd.
