I put a 3 speed upgrade into a savage X and it seems not to shift into first it is stuck in second or prob 3rd does anyone know what the settings are from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd I hate having to take this thing out to adjust 1st -2nd

Keep in mind that the original 3 speed clutch settings are for a savage 25. Do Not Use there shift points. For a 4.1 or bigger the points are
2nd gear: 2 turns in
3rd gear: 5 turns in
That was from HPI tech guys. They haven't changed the manual or put an edition to it yet. Also if you are running a hot engine you will have to go in on the 2nd gear clutch a 1/2 turn. so say 2 1/2 turns in to start with. you should be threw the gears in 15 to 20 feet no more.

This should help ya set it up

Just wondered when you say 2.5 turns in....or 5 turns in....Do you mean to start with the adujuster set screw from flush then 2.5 turns in? and respectively 5 for the 2nd 3rd gear shift.

I'm just not sure how you start the measurement could you clarify.

I think (not postive ) that its from when you start the threads. so flush I gess hope someone else could clear this up also .... anyone REALLY know????

I bought it all assembled, the problem is that it stopped shifting into 3rd and I have been adjusting constantly to get it into 3rd.....The thing I would like to do is start from Zero again.....I really find that the 3 speed is more a pain than its worth especially if you have to adjust 2nd to 3rd shift.

It was shifting fine for the longest time ( I had to adjust it to shift proper for my 4.6 hpi) and just this season it has acted up and now causing all the problems. Any idea on why it would go for a crapper like that....Is there something I need to replace rather than adjust?....like the 3rd gear clutch?

Thanks guys!

my shift gets messed up sometimes if it too hot outside. it starts to shift really late or not at all which is why i usually wait till around 6 to drive mine

2nd to 3rd shouldn't be the problem (you can adjust that from the outside of the case) 1st to 2nd is where people have problems just b/c you have to open the tranny up.

ok guys Main forum we have a link to most manuals. There is a ring in the clutches where the grub screw goes. when it has been turned in and the top of the screw is flush with the line in the clutch that is the starting point.
first work on 1st to 2nd. to do this turn 3rd in 6 to 9 turns so you will not shift. get 1st to 2nd right then back 3rd out to 5 turns. done. also if you get grease in the clutches they gum up and stop working. sometimes the clutch screws will walk also.

Are you sure about that Site Jester?....that its second and third on the outside and 1st and 2nd on the inside?.....I believe it, just I have had so many people tell me different so I would like some certainty on this.

Sad thing here is that I should know on my own, I'm not all that new at this game....had my savage for 4 years now...maybe more?....I just don't do all the reading homework that I should.

yea Iam sure 1st to 2nd is a tear down DO WHAT MEGA SAID ! thats the best way to get it to shift right from 1st to 2nd!

That's why the x gearbox upgrade is nice. easy to pull the tranny and get it done. takes me about 5 min to pull the tranny tear it down and put it back together and run. tore down 2 trannies swapped a reverse module and 3 speed in about 25min for Parker. I have become quite good at it. 1st to 2nd you have to tear the tranny down.
