My friend has a new Savage x 4.6. I hate to say it but he has had alot of trouble with his. I haven't had much trouble but my own fault. His first time out he broke a pinion gear, melted the slipper clutch into the spur gear. Next day he tore all the teeth off of the spur gear. We changed all that and he run it a little here and their maybe 2 tanks worth. He put a set of bigger tires and wheels on it today and got about 1/2 a tank of fuel through it doing nothing but running WOT out and back and it stopped moving. No more teeth on the spur gear. What are we doing wrong. I haven't broke one yet and have a gallon of fuel through mine. We did the paper trick, not sure what the paper was to supposed to look like though. It didn't cut the paper, it just looked like an accordian. thanks. :40:

i set mine by folding a piece of paper three times running it into the gears and push the motor in tight and it works great for me

make sure it is not idling to high cause that will cause the clutch bell to heat up and melt the spur

just my 2 cents

Gee 3 folds. I used to only use a single piece of paper and now do it with nothing. I have over 10 Gallons on my one truck and am on the second motor and have gone threw 3 total plastic spurs and 2 were my fault right away due to bad gear mesh.

Yes your clutch bell could be getting hot due to clutch shoe slippage otherwise gear mesh could be the issue.

ive tried it with 1 and 2 folds and they felt to tight when i pushed the gear together, they wouldnt roll freely and felt tight.but with 3 folds and the gears tight, when the paper comes out there a perfect matchfor me

Ok Thank you. I don't think the idle is too high, the truck sets perfectly still when idling. The wheels will spin slow when it is upside down, but thats it. It will take all the teeth off all the way around except about a 1/16 of in inch of teeth around the edge. I don't know if that could be the problem. You can't slide the motor forward or back just tighter or less gear mesh. I just don't understand why I have a gallon of fuel and no problem and I beat mine. He baby's his and it broke,,,, twice.. It's got to be something simple. How do you know how to adjust your slipper clutch to where it is right.

Personally I run my slippers locked tight or very close to it. I don't think its a slipper issue unless your melting the center out of it.

If its stripping all the teath off its gat to be the gear mesh. You should have less than 1mm of slop in the gears. they should be tight but should spin freely with limited gear noise.

Does this truck have a good smoke trail and what is the temps you are runnin with this truck. Another great thing to eliminate some problems would be to go to Aluminum clutch shoes and a vented Clutch Bell.

If the clutch bell were getting too hot would it still chew all the teeth off the spur? When mine got too hot it just took a chunk out of the spur, all the rest of the teeth were perfectly intact.

It is a mesh issue for sure. Have patience, it takes a while to set it correctly. I don't use the paper idea, I just inspect closely before setting. Steel spur gear is also great if you bash hard. Good luck!

I tend to stick to plastic spurs no matter bashing hard or racing. They are a great weak link. If you have a good gear mesh and proper heat they will last for ever. The truck I spoke of in post #3 is my Basher and it gets trashed but well taken care of as all my stuff does. It gets cleaned and inspected between every day of running.

the truck runs around 210. He just stripped another one. We noticed that it is stripping the top of the teeth off. so we are going to try the paper trick and see what happens this time. thank you

If the mill wont slid to mesh it try cleaning the engine mount I had to much lock tight on it and it couldn't slide from side to side. Also make sure the mount is solid and there is no cracks. As for the meshing I got away from the paper thing and now I take a small screw driver with my right hand and lock it in the clutch bell with the left hand move the spur gear and you can see and feel the way it's messed. You should have very minimal play but the bell and spur should feel free and no tention when both are spined. Once u have done it it comes natural. Give it a try see what u think Cheers!!

Thank you. we will try the screwdriver trick next time. We done the 3 paper trick and it definately felt alot better when you rolled the spur over. We will try it tomorrow and see how it works. Keep ya posted. Thanks again.

i just go and hold the clutch bell still and wiggle the spur a mm either way ad so far beeing on the 3rd spur its working so far

i like the 3 fold paper.its the easy way i have found cause u can push the gears together as hard as u can and so far i havebeen on the same spur for 2 gallons.
different strokes for different folks, this just works best for me

well said,

When you think you have the perfect amount of play between the cb and spur , spin the spur by hand, it should spin free and smooth with very little Resistance. If not start again.

good luck

I also get mim 2-3 gallons out of a plastic spur and they usually only break in roll over crashes where the head gets hit hard and moves the engine so slightly.
