I do need a servo for steering, but i haven't decided which one i'll buy yet... How much torque does a servo need to steer 40 series tires and wheels?

tug, it all comes down to how much cash is in your steering-servo budget.

i got the 645mg last year cuz its cheap but better than the stocker & i wanted to put my available funds toward other mods.

IMO-a servo with some-more torque & speed will make you happier & last longer because a stronger servo will not have to work as hard to get the job done (or any tool you ever buy for that matter).

Right now i am running the 645mg and it works, but i am saving a couple bucks/week to upgrade.

guys that know servos have recommended as a minimum to get 200 oz/ .15 which will run you in the neighborhood of $100.00 or so.

Guys all have their personal favorites & i've heard peeps be happy with Hitec, Airtronics, JR, Futaba, etc so its a matter of choice on the mfg IMO

If you don't have $100, then get a 645mg hitec for now & set aside a little coin each week so you can upgrade.

I also was thinking about upgrading my stock steering servo. Is the 645mg a drop in replacement for the stock radio/receiver? I am using the Rx/Tx that came with my truck. I know I don't have the funds to pick up a digi system... yet.

its also possible to get a servo with more torque & speed without going digital if that better suits your wants & needs

Thanks for the info... I can pay $100, but i wanna know the servos like 645mg is enough or the 200 oz ones are necessary?

You should spend a little time on ebay tugsan. I got a HPI sf-5 cheap and it works pretty good and it will match the stuff you have now. I believe that the sf-5 is a metal gear but its 124 oz/in @ 6v, I think. It works fine for me, but if you go higher, lets say 200oz+ you will get better steering response. Hope that helps.

the 645mg will work and turn your truck while its running. i am using it now. i have losi zombies & this servo doesnt have enough torque to move the tires L&R when the truck is still and not moving. shoot you a video if you wanna see.

so again, the 645mg will work for a period of time but, after using it for over 6 months, id recommend a servo with more torque. it would make sense that a higher torque servo would last you longer.

BTW Magoowhen you bashin with us? we is watchin you :stickpoke:

x2 freddy it will work while running, imo the 645 is better suited as a
throttle/brake servo. 200oz is a good number for stearing, anything over 180oz is good.
i just got 2 airtronics 94359 heat sink metal gear high torque servos
for $65 shipped, there $100 servos... each. spend some time searching ebay there are always good deals out there.
