So, I was thinking of doing some mods to my Savage:
1. OFNA linkage
2. adding a reverse module with a new Tx/Rx with 3 ch and replacing servos with digital ones

And I have some questions..

For nr. 1 (OFNA link)- all clear, no questions!

For no. 2 (reverse), I am thinking of doing this by buying:

QUESTIONS
1. Is the combo listed above well suited? I mean does it worth having a FASST rather than AM/FM type radios?

2. Besided the parts listed above, do I need other parts for the installation?

3. For the HPI reverse, it say that the 3rd channel must be switching type, not proportional. Will work with the Futaba listd above?

4. Has the Futaba above the ABS system for brakes? And how does it work? Is it good?

5. For this combo, do I still need cristals? I assume not, but just to make sure.

6. Is the reverse module worth buying? I mean, can it do some harm to the drivetrain, gear, etc? And if the reverse is not worth buying, what other combo Tx/Rx should I use?

7. Can you recommend other Rx/Tx especially from Tower (so I could order them as I live in Europe, Romania)

Thanks and hope I will not bother/bore you.

Ofna linkage, i haven't done it personally so i cant comment on that...

But the Futaba Radio was the first thing i got for my XL and it is worth every penny... i love my 3PM FASST... i haven't replaced my servos yet, i figured i would do that as they broke, or wore out...

The OFNA linkage is easy. You just need a few kits to make it happen.

The Futaba FASST 2.4g is AWESOME! I run all my rigs with it.

You don't need no stinkin' reverse. Not having it makes you a better driver. 🙂

OK, but then if I don't need a reverse, why a 3 channel radio? Or can I find Futaba Fasst in 2 channel (haven't spotted it on tower...)..

Anyway, I think it's best to have a 3 ch radio.. who knows what I might need in the future..🙂

There is no 2 channel FASST.

You never know when you'll need it. I don't use the 3rd channel for my Savage, but I am adding a dig or rear-steer setup on my crawler that will use it.

The best part about it is no frequencies to mess with. I go bash with a group and they spend half the day trying to figure out who is on what while I am out bashing. And I have never hit the max range on it so far. Built in fail-safe too.

i hear ya i haven't hit max range yet.... that and that failsafe has saved my truck more than once....

I assume you already have a few servos in your truck? You will need a servo to run the reverse module, since you didn't list it I didn't know if you knew that. Also when using the reverse remember to give it a few seconds to stop moving before starting the reverse otherwise you could damage the transmission.

Ya personally I think reverse is a waste. It just one more thing that can go wrong and usually does. As for the OFNA mod, I love mine, You can adjust the linkage more accurately I find and is also easier.

Yes, I do have the standard servos. And I think I will put the standard HPI SF1 servo for the reverse, because I really don't need a new digital servo for it.
Thanks anyway for your advices.

I will think about the reverse. The problem is that where I live the hobby shops are selling parts (though the parts range is kinda limited, as they also import from big distributors) at very high prices. For example the Futaba 3PM is about 350$, the reverse is about 50$. That's why I want to buy online, but I must also consider the shipment price, so I kinda really need to buy all that I need or will probably need in one shipment.

With this transport I also included some o-rings for shocks, for diffs, some heavy-duty dog bones, grease for diffs, etc.

1. Bottom line: do you advise me NOT to install even in the future the reverse module?

2. HPI SF2 servo says in specs: 6.5kg@6V, this is 229.28oz, correct?
And now the Hitec HS-5645MG Digital High Torque Metal Gear BB Servo: 164 oz@6V, that is 4.6kg? Is that correct? And will this servo be enough for the Savage steering?

3. If I don't buy the reverse module, can I go for a powerful digital steering servo (other than Hitec HS-5645MG)? Or this one is enough?

4. Is the HPI Aluminum Tuned Pipe 21+ Purple good for replacing the stock pipe? I want a pipe that will not cost so much, maybe max 50$.

Thanks

I have 1 truck with reverse and 1 truck w/o I don't ever miss it. It has saved me steep long climbs in sand pits to go get my truck! I don't bash the racer.
I don't know of any HPI servo having that much torque. Plus it is plastic geared
I would get a better servo than the 645mg IMO. I like over 200oz and under .14 sec
The HPI tuned pipe works good!
My 2 cents. Good luck!

can someone please post a link for the ofna link, thanks

Here is exactly what I used:

OFNA 10725 Qty 2

OFNA 10705 Qty 1

Dubro 815 Qty 1

OFNA 10732 Qty 1 optional

Integy T6909PURPLE Qty 1 optional

The SF-2 is about 120oz of torque. Replace your steering servo and replace the SF-1 for t/b with the SF-2.

Reverse is just added weight and something else to break.

The HPI tuned pipe will bring your motor to life. Great pipe. Ribbed is loud and slower on top end. But if you got the bucks, buy the Buku pipe.

Yup I use the HS-5645MG servo for steering and its great. As for the pipe, I think that the HPI polished pipe is probably the best bang for your buck pipe on the market and offers great performance for the price.

And I also used what whipnet used for his OFNA mod and copied his design, works great.

@WHIPNET: where can I see your OFNA mod? Is there a post somewhere here? Thanks.

OK. I will NOT buy the reverse. I think I will do ok without it!
