I've looked through some old posts but still can't quite find what I need. I have an X 4.6 RTR and am comtemplating upgrading to the 3 speed. Is the 3 speed really worth it? Now if it is worth it should I buy the parts or just buy the assembled tranny? Thanks for your help.

If I keep having issues with mine, I will go back to 2 speed. It is more tuning but like everything else you just got to fiddle with it and get it right. If you don't have the easy access tranny housing you should buy that and the conversion kit at same time and swap them in together.

The 3-speed is nice for acceleration and hearing the two shifts is nice, but it gives no increase in top speed, unfortunately. To get a top speed boost, you'll need to add the #77065 high-speed 3rd gear set. If you DO get that #77065, make sure it's the updated version. The originals were machined/cast improperly and won't fit.

As for going with the kit vs. assembled...depends on you. I got the kit because I already had a two-speed and I had never opened up my transmission and wanted to see what it looked like. The kit installation takes a little time, but it's not difficult.

:40: I just finished installing the three speed on my K 4.6 kit . I chose the kit version because I wanted to install the reverse module at the same time.Tht was a really fun job. If you have the ready to run, and arent putting in three speed you migt as well just spend the extra 25 bucks unless like Doesgo You want to familiarize yourself with youre tranny. The instuctions with the kit are great. As long as you foolow them you will have no problem. As for performance,I live in Oh. so it was only 38 degrees ,kinda hard to really heat it up ,so as far as top end .It seemed faster but the low end was awesome rigt from the start .Cold engine and all. I anticipated this so I installed the HPI wheelir bar while I was at it.Good thig to ,The stock tranny will lift the front pretty easily but with that lower gear,Holly @@@.Remember this is at 38 F. Just fired up. Anyhow I hopr this will help. If you decide to go kit ,and have any issues .Feel free to E mail or post.Good Luck. C~Ya
