3 speed or 2 speed tranny?

No you don't need to do that to see. If you have a stock savy X you will have a 2 speed in it. If you bought it used and are not sure then remove the 4 screws holding the roll bar on . Next you will look at the tranny from the top down and you will see 2 recessed slots, 1 towards the back of it and 1 towards the front. There will be 2 screws in those slots that you will remove. Once you did that the top half of the tranny case will pull straight up. If you see 3 gears in the top half, you have a three speed, 2 a 2 speed. If you have the older version of the savage you WILL have to pull the whole tranny out.

no big deal but actually there is 3 screws looking down from the top that have to be removed. I just pulled mine off.
Thats a good question, I guess there really is no way to tell, especially if the shift points are not set correctly, (you could just try to run it and see if you can hear it shift 1 or 2 times.

Ok, thanks for the answers.
Edit. Now I have striped down two trannys, one 2 speed and one 3 speed.
The tranny wich I can pull up the top half it is just 2 gears on the top, and the old tranny that was supposed to be a 2 speed tranny, have 3 gears on top half. So, what is right?

The 2 speed has 2 gears in the top where the 3 speed has 3. Here is a link to the it. Note the gears. This is the Old style case.

Personally, I would put the 3 speed gears in the X box you have and run that.

Lucky you, now take the trans case that has the top that comes off ( the savage X style trans) and put the three speed stuff in there. This will make adjusting second gear so much easier.
keeping it fun for all, thats what I do. lol
