Liquid masking...questions, and possibly a product review/paint tutorial?

Hey fellow Savage freaks!!

I've finally finished my latest home improvement project, and am about to embark on my first really fancy painted body for my Savage Racer...in my head it looks pretty sweet...hope it looks at least half as good in reality...

anyway, my question is: Does anyone have any experience with the liquid masking products available?? does it dry clear? or opaque? alot of the work I'll be doing will be using templates attached to the outside of the body, so I'll want to cut the masking out from the inside, using the templates on the outside as a guide...

as near as I can tell, there are 2 methods of using the masking...

first one is to coat the entire inside of the body with the stuff, then cut away the designs you want to paint...(only works for me if it dries clear)

second would be to simply paint the masking to the designs, and paint them last...this one will prove to be MUCH more of a paint, as painting around the designs templates will prove more challenging than cutting around them...

one method paints the designs first, and the other paints the background/main body color first...

the Airbrush I'll be using USED TO BE a decent one, but I got it used from a friend, and it's seen better days...seems to function fine though...it's a Paasche (Model H I think)...

the paints I'll be using are a combination of Parma's Faskolor paints and Createx Airbrush paints...with a few other random acrylic paints used for small details here and there (more than likely applied by brush and hand)

paint-scheme: Scarlet or Blood red, Black, Grey/Silver/Chrome(if I can find a chrome paint I actually like)...big Axial logo accross the hood and on the doors, and other touches and logos, etc throughout...

the body: Proline's Crowd Pleazer


I will try to remember to post pictures throughout the process, but I often get ahead of myself, and forget...

any helpful advice or hints or tips of any sort would be appreciated...

liquid mask is AWESOME! Apply no less than 2 coats so that it's easier to peel off. I had great lines when I used it.
 
you guys have a preffered method? mask the whole thing and cut the design out? or just paint the design on with the masking?

also, what brands have people used? I bought Parma's FasMask mostly because I had never heard of the other brand they carried, but have heard there are several brands available...

getting too late to start now (gotta head to work soon) will have to start in the morning...

I masked the whole body and had drawn my design on the outside of the body(since there is a protective film.....I used a hobby knife with a dull tip to cut away the liquid mask designs. Lines came out nice and clean.
 
perfect...as mentioned above, that's what I bought, although I bought the BIG jar...LOL!! good thing, in case I use chunky's method, and coat the whole thing...

well, I'm hoping this will turn out as kewl as I'm hoping...I used a flatbed scanner, to scan the detail stuff (Axial logo...RPM & THS logos...etc), then printed them out...I figure I'll tape them against the outside of the body, and cut the masking out correspondingly...and anything with text, I'm using Windows paint to reverse the image, so painted on the inside will read properly on the outside...

I can't wait to POST some pic LOL!! but the masking says to give it a full day to dry, and I won't have a chance to get started 'til tomorrow morning...so pictures are going to be slow going...but I'll take pics of what I have so far (airbrush/compressor setup, paints, masking stuff, un-painted body, maybe a sketch of the planned paint-job)


quick question for Chunky...would you fellas (mods/site owners) mind if I use one of the site logo idea Moto posted in the sticker thread (with his permission as well of course)?? might be a silly question, but wouldn't wanna step on any toes :resp:

Sounds good, I was thinking about the designs Moto did too, other than that I really don't have any design ideas I really like yet, or feel I will be able to do them and have it turn out good., but I am really anxious to get going on this.

I just got an air compressor and airbrush myself, I have been praticing on the inside of the plastic from items, I don't know what it is called but like a molded plastic clear packing material, a lot of times you find them on products that hang on wall displays. they work pretty good for pratice, just hard to come by.
 
you're thinking of "clamshell" type packaging...if you want to practice more, use 2-liter pop bottles...only downside is they tend to try curling up once you cut them open...
 
Hey Guys, the hardest part for me is figuring out what to do. Its different for me because I am used to get the base down then worry about the graphics. Painting backwards and on the inside is tricky to get your ideas down and get all the necessary steps in to get the result your looking for. One thing I did was on one of my first airbrushed body I did Lightning. Fairly simple. Good airbrush practice, And it got me thinking of the end result as I started. Granted it had a couple small flaws but overall came out really sweet. It was actually my first sell on the bay. I let the guy know in the ad it wasn't perfect he knew it, saw it personally and mentioned it, but overall was very happy with his purchase. YOU Are YOUR Worst Critic, you know where that flaw is. Don't stress it! Its a savage body Not a 6 digit showcar. Take your time, think it through 2x, then do it. Most that look at it ,look at it as a whole, not with thier nose on the clearcoat looking for 800 grit scratches in the primer. Relax and Enjoy painting, You will be proud of what you've done. Sorry if I seem to be rambleing but don't overstress it. You all know where to ask any questions, and get answers. Relax, enjoy the process and Admire your work. You will someday have the need, and hopefully the desire to do it again. so lets see some paint already, Geez! LOL
 
I'm not overstressing anything...LOL and I HAVE painted a body before...the only reason paint isn't flying already, is that I've been at work since I started this thread...plus I have to apply the masking, and allow it to dry...plus I thought it'd be nice to post a string of pictures showing my progress (once I start making some of course)

you don't have to tell me that I'm my own worst critic...I've known that for over 20 years...LOL

and as to the need and desire to do it again, well, that's an absolute fact, as I've got a stack of 5 more unpainted bodies waiting for painting...all in good time though...
 
% bodies! god god man, Not at my house, It may lay around a day or two, But it's DONE. I got like 9 painted and would love a blank one.lol No offense intended I's just flippin duky. Mor eto wister than yourself.. just razzin yaall.
 
only reason I have so many unpainted is 'cuz I got a killer package deal...5 new in bag bodies for about $60 shipped on eBay...plus I've been busy all summer with home improvements...vinyl windows and siding...finally done, so have some spare time now...
 
OK...day one is pretty much just gathering materials/supplies, and then prepping and masking the body...


here's the gear I'll be using (unless I find a spare $70-ish for a new airbrush 🙂 )

so tomorrow I may get to start trimming the details in the masking as long as the masking dries by then...LOL
 
the guys at the hobby shop recommended "All clad" Lexan Chrome...anyone have any experience with it? I bought a small bottle of it...hope it's as good as the guy said...I should prolly get some SpazStix mirror chrome as Chunky suggested, and I still may, this weekend...

also, does anyone have a good suggestion for regulating the pressure on my compressor? I found a suitable gauge in my stuff, but nothing to regulate it...

For regulators my compressor had one on it, but I was going to get one of these, or something like it http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=5_163_166 only thing those guyss are really slow at shipping stuff, I would not buy from them, also they didn't tell me they were out oif stock on a compressor I had ordered until a week later when I emailed to see when it shoiped.

the chrome, well I haven't tried yet but I am going to try to use spazstix as a backer should look ice, I hope.
 
On the link wister sent if you click on vcalves in the left column. The top valvew/guage is what i use. I keep the comp. pressure up and adjust the valve at the gun to the pressure I like.
 
not sure how that all works...my compressor is a continuous running one (doesn't have a holding/pressure tank) so whatever pressure it's putting out, is what I get...you think just adjusting it at the gun is enough? there's no way for me to know what pressure I'm shooting that way though...
 
ok...here's a helpful hint (at least it would have been helpful to me...LOL!!) when using the liquid masking stuff, use many thin layers to build it up...I used a method I read online, where the guy poured the stuff into the body, and just smeared it all around with his fingers 'til everything was coated...it works, but while drying, any excess liquid pools in the bottom (roof and hood) of the body, which takes FOREVER to dry completely...I posted pics on day one, when I applied the masking, and as of today, there are still a few spots on the hood and roof which are opaque (not dry yet)...

so needless to say, no paint yet...never fear though...in the next day or 2 (I hope) it will be dry, and I can start cutting out for the details, and applying some paint...

Ok say your compressor puts out say 50 psi max. Mine will. If you regulate the air at the pump to 35 psi then you know its a constant psi at the gun. You will not be starting at 50 and bleeding down to like 40 as you spray. Using the pressure reg is not necessary, but it will make your spray more consistant.. And hope fully your roof and hood sections won't be so thick its difficult to work with.

gotcha...I'll check and see if my local air pressure/hose supply shop carries that...
 
Hi,

I hd a problem with getting the liquid mask on too thick too, when cutting it it pulled up both sides on me, just pulls up too esy when too thick. I had a new exacto blade on it too and had a hard time getting it to cut through it smoothly, i guess thats why it pulled up, also could have been because I had very few coats on it too, thanks for the tip on many thin coats.
