The engine may be salvageable, but you would need some experience with glow engines to stand any reasonable chance of repairing it.

Glow engines depend on a tapered, very close fit between the aluminium piston and chromed cylinder liner. You may see ABC or ABN in relation to nitro - Aluminium Brass Chrome and Aluminium Brass Nickel respectively.

A scored piston/liner necessitates replacement parts - the engine simply won't work without a perfect fit between them. Piston and sleeve ideally should be purchased together.

The scoring to the crank case is less problematic, but it would still benefit from being cleaned up and buffed out so to speak.

There has obviously been a serious failure inside that engine or it has ingested something - very hard to tell which without a thorough inspection. If you're new to Nitro, I recommend that you cut your teeth on a new engine and then repair the existing engine as a side project.

Running in a typical modern engine isn't difficult and the engine should at least start reliably.

I don't recommend you start trying to run an engine that has been damaged internally - if it has leaky bearings and other issues, you will be attempting to learn how to start/tune an engine that might not be able to run right - or at all even - so look into getting a new reliable running engine and clutch.

Ok, so clearly there's some pitting on the top of that piston. The engine will need a rebuild and whilst not all that difficult to do, it may be easier - possibly even cheaper - to just buy a new engine.

The big end is knackered and that's what's damaged the piston, sleeve and casing etc.

I doubt this engine is economically viable to repair unless of course you can source the parts on eBay or something?

Do you know where I can buy secondhand parts from ??
If you know what engine it is -

eBay
Modelsport
Wheels pin Models
Euro RC

That should help.

But honestly - is this your first nitro?

If it is, you are 100% better off starting with a new engine & carb. Or someone's demonstrably ready tuned, well maintained engine from a local club.

Anything else is a lottery and you'll have too many variables to get the engine to start - let alone haul a savage around. It will just lead to bad feelings and your Savage will be moth-balled again. 😬

It's a very steep learning curve for the first few weeks - if your engine or carb is faulty, then you may not be able to differentiate between user error or equipment failure. That's a tough deal.

Well all I can say is Nitro engines are awesome when you figure them out. Tuning isn't just about getting them to run - if they're allowed to run lean, damage to the sleeve/piston can result.

If you start with an engine that's already past it's best - your perception of what a nitro engine RC car is will be ruined forever.

I'm happy to help with written advice when I can, but what you really need is just a couple of hours with someone firing up your nitro car, fueling it, adjusting the carb etc.

What fuel have you got?
