Hi all

I like the HPI big bore shock sets but have been put off from the price £95 plus, in the UK ?
To be honest I cannot justify myself spending this kind of money for some shocks, in essence for a toy!

You guys are the experts, I am a total newbie - what alternate brands of shock sets would you recommend for a budget of about £50-£60 for a full set

Thanks guys

Far from toys if you ask me, but as for cheaper alternatives look at the stock HPI plastic big bore shocks, anything alloy is not going to be cheap and NOTHING in the R/C hobby is cheap either, take it from me I have over 50 operational running R/C vehicles and I probably could have bought a house with what I have in my fleet of vehicles.....

It’s a passion and a great hobby of yours, so I can totally understand how much you have possibly spent on your R/C and I also get, it’s not a toy for people like yourself as this is your passion.

My passion and hobby is / was tropical fish, Marine and also wild caught Malawi cichlids☺️ - I would spend hundred’s of pounds on a few fish ?. And I would tell the ex a quarter of the price I actually paid ??

For me this is a little toy that I like to have a bit of fun with, with my 14 yr old son who has now in herrited my savage 25 which again I only used a handful of times and it was new.

Only reason I purchased the savage XL as my son said “dad why don’t you get one and both of us can play” I wanted something bigger in size and wanted HPI as in the past all I heard was great things about HPI and my savage 25 always started first time and run with absolutely no issues and really fast compared to my brother and cousins who had traxxass, which would take forever to start, run really slow and it not working or things breaking ?

Yes I have had a look at the standard HPI big bore shock set,
I just thought may be / surely there are alternatives out their that is slightly cheaper than HPI aluminium shocks ? If so what are they ? as like I said I am totally new to this so I have no idea what is a good brand and what is crap

Like I stated in my above post you can get the big bore shocks in a plastic version and they do work quite well....
Please read the posts a bit more carefully and it will save you time, I included a link to sets of plastic big bores for your reference.....
I highly doubt you will find any alloy shocks prebuilt for your rig so the plastic may be the best option to go with

I went with these shock bodies from Integy on my truck, I got them on E Bay for 30 bux a set of 2, keep in mind that you will need 4 big bore donor shocks to get the internals from or buy the parts as I did to build mine.......

Yes those are decent, some say they leak alot, the ones I posted are also Integy minus the piggyback, I sealed mine using associated green slime on all the O rings and used hydraulic sealant on all the threads, so far mine do not leak and function very well......

Springs look soft ?
Much wider gaps compared the standard shocks, I presume they are?

I’ve never bought anything of aliexpress
Always been a bit iffy about sites like that.

Are you able to post the link for the same shocks ?
Do they do the outer canister is chrome / silver, instead of gold ?

The Spring rate is actually much stiffer than the Hpi bigbores,
I've screwed the preload all the way back and their still a lot more resistance than the Hpi springs,

I don't like the Hpi bigbores Spring rate as it feels way too soft even with a heap of preload,
The only bit of plastic on these aftermarket bigbores is the shock piston,
Really wasn't expecting the quality to be quite as good as what it is at the price there at,
Came full of shock oil and just a very miniscule amount of bleeding to do,

I've been buying from aliexpress for a few years now,
Just stick to the sellers offering PayPal and you can't go wrong,

Hey sparky

That link you provided, I’m seeing a few shocks so not sure which is the ones you purchased,
Could you possibly click onto the picture / listing if he ones you have purchased and copy and post that link here please,
That way it will take me to the exact page.

By the way I came across these on eBay , see pictures , looks identical to yours but not sure, you know how it is with these Chinese stuff - carbon copy look spikes but not the same And you said yours came with shock oil where as these are all ready prefilled
Unless that is what you also meant ?

Managed to find same ones on aliexpress price of £18.60 inc delivery - fingers crossed they turn up as never purchased from aliexpress before,
not sure if mine are filled with oil or not if not its fine as oil is only a few quid.
fingers crossed they are good

thanks sparky for letting me know about them

Here they are on my Savage XL and to be honest they are pretty decent. They don't leak and are heavier than the HPI big bore shocks by 10 grams only.

Here are some more photos of the unbranded shocks I got over the internet. The third and fourth photos are of side by side comparison with the HPI big bore shocks. I must tell you that the HPI shocks are a bit softer. But they have several plastic components, in particular the cap...

My shocks arrived today and wow they are massive compared to the standard shocks that was in the truck.

I received 8 shocks ? I was confused ...
Looked at the ad , read the receipt and bloody thing was like £18 A PAIR!! For some reason at the time of buying them I thought it was £18 each
Flippin dumb ?

well you bought a set of 8 when you really just need 4, one for each wheel is going to be enough, that is why later models came with 4 big bore vs the 8 regular shocks that came on the earlier models......

Yeh I know ?
Don’t need to remind me jam ????
Ow well I’ll try to sell them off I guess

:woot::p:p:p

:lmao:

So old thread I know, but I just ordered a set of the shocks from AliExpress.

This is for a Savage 4.6, what would be a good weight oil?

I have Cen GST 7.7 alum shocks on mine which are very similar to the BB, just a little shorter in length. Also git Hellfire springs for them. I used 35wt oil in mine. Truck handles good with that set-up. I also installed a short pc of tubing (automotive vacuum tubing) on the shock shaft between the body and piston inside of the shock to make it shorter. With the suspension settled, the A-arms are level with the ground. I used the vacuum tubing cuz it's stiffer than nitro fuel tubing.

Also, shock fluid doesn't prevent the truck from bottoming out, it's the amount of shock travel. The shock oil is used to help the suspension handle the bumps better and provide a more stable & smooth ride. Hope this helps also.
