when i see 300f i shut it down, but it runs like a raped ape.
if i try to tune to run cooler it runs like crap ..........any ideas?
i live in south florida running on monster brew

thanks

How much fuel have you ran through it?
In other words, is it broke in yet?
Was the engine sealed properly?
Whats the nitro/oil % on the fuel?

I don't know about the 30 but I ran over 3/4 a gallon before I started racing it.

It takes a STS .30 a gallon for break in. Please don't tell me your going full throttle on the 10th tank.

If you only have 10 tanks through the D30M you shouldn't be tuning for power yet. The new STS Version 2 D30M has a very tight pinchand rushing the break in will lead to a toasted engine.

Did you do any type of static, the RC is not moving, break in? Examples are a heat cycle or idle break in.

What nitro % fuel are you using?

What glow plug are you using?

The STS Version 2 D30M will run very hot if you try to get too much out of it before it has had the chance to break in the very tight piston to sleave tolerance. I am at the 2.5 gallon mark and my RB modded STS Version 2 D30M runs at around 280 to 290 deg F and it is still tuned rich. A modded mill will run hotter than a stock version so my temps are close to where they should be. If you are running this hot you need to address a couple of areas that I found to be trouble spots on my STS D30M.

First, seal the engine. Very easy to do and there is a sticky here that can guide you through it, but basically you need to remove the backplate and carb. After you remove them clean the surface of the plate, carb and surfaces of the engine block with nitro cleaner. Apply a small amount of Permatex Ultra Copper or Threebond 1211 Silicone to the surface of the block where the back plate goes and to the neck of the carb that enters the block and reinstall both parts. Also coat the pinch bolt that holds the carb in place, just spread some silicone over the both side openings after the hardware is reinstalled. Remember to use some BLUE thread lock on the backplate screws.

Second, the STS's carb SUCK MAJOR POONTANG! You need to replace all of the o-rings that came on it from the factory. HPI 25 carb O-rings work fine, but I just swapped the STS 9mm carb for the carb off of an HPI K4.6HO. If you chose to keep the STS carb you will also need some Associated Green Slime grease to lubericate and help seal the needles.

Third, what exhaust are you running? The D30M seems to only really perform at it's best with the STS 0702 exhaust pipe. With this combo the engine also runs cooler. Your exhaust may be too restrictive causing extra combustion chamber heat.

Tuning with the STS carb is a new experience. The needles have a very course thread and require very little input to make huge changes. When tuning an STS carb make adjustments in 1/16th of a turn increments so you don't skip over the sweet spot.

You problem is you probable need to do more break in and you are playing tennis with the carb needles. Run a quality fuel, I use 30% Trinity, use the propper glow plug, seal the engine to make sure only the carb is feeding air to your tune, continue breaking in the engine and remember that the STS carb is very sensetive to needle movement.

Give it a little more time and you should be fine.

Try running 30% nitro/ 11% oil fuel with the STS. Also try a hot plug, McCoy MC-59. The combo of higher nitro and hotter plug may help the STS run better when you richen it up to cool down the temps.

if you don't have a air leak ... then after brake in the temps will drop.

BUT MY GOD DUDE DON"T RUSH BRAKE IN !!!!!!!!!. you probably allready caused some premature engine damage

Also you could try and cut the exhaust stinger off like 3/8 of an inch.
I heard this helps drop temps ... What pipe do you have ??? get the sts pipe if you don't have one .. also check your front bearing make sure its not leaking..

I think your in good hands now, Notman.

These guys, Defiant Spaz, and Site Jester, really know STS's. They will help you with anything that comes up. Listen and learn their experiences.

Your too lucky to have caught this in time. And then, to get there advice, "priceless".
=========Thats no joke, Notman.=========
Good Luck

yeah if u don't properly break an engine in u can SEVERELY screw things up my friend bought a rustler and ran 3 tanks through it and called it good and ruined the engine
