Does anybody know the part number for the shock rebuild kit for the XL 5.9, mine are leaking oil all over the place.

does your truck have the plastic "big bores" on it or are they just stock shocks like on the x and others......

they look like the stock plastic ones So my next stupid question for the day is how do I tell the difference between the standard shocks and the big bores?

I could be wrong, but I believe that the XL only ever came with big bore shocks.

Here is the parts list for the big bores:

I assume you are leaking around the shaft? If so replace these o-rings:

And possibly the shafts as well, sometimes if there are scrapes on the shafts they makes the o-rings not work well.

If you have some green slime (o-ring sealer) then first try coating the above linked o-rings and reinstalling. I did this on my LST shocks recently and this stopped all leaking.

My XL 5.9 was a 2010 model and had 8 regular shocks on it, I think they added the stock plastic big bores on later.

So as I have never paid attention to stock shocks over big bore what makes them the big bore is it the shaft size? These look like the ones on my 25 SS which I hope so as I have a brand new set sitting in the box of parts I picked up several years ago.

The main differences between the two are as you said, shaft size, as well as that the big bores had a progressive spring setup. Also that obviously the number used changed.

the big bores have a larger piston. hpi started putting big bores on the x and xl in 2011. I have the 2012 version of the x, so Ive never know standard shocks on mine. my dad's 25 as 8 though. big bores give u better flexibility, in my eyes. and they give u a better ride

We will see I have 8 shocks on my XL now, I am going to set them up like my SS I run the purple springs with 35 weight oil and have o-rings installed on the shocks to make it ride almost level. When I used to run my SS at the BMX park it soaked up the jumps and bumps like a champ, I know there are weight differences between the 2 trucks but am willing to try.
