Where do I start?

I have an old HPI flux in storage for the last 5 years and am planning on resurrecting it. I let a friend try it out and he put in in reverse while running forward at 1/2 speed !! Any ideas where to start to locate the issue, before I tear it down? Parts availability in Canada (especially for the flux) are becoming difficult to come by. Any suggestions
would be helpful.

without knowing symptoms it is difficult to diagnose any problem.... Parts are available on E Bay, ya ya I know shipping sux, but what can you do if you want it to run again....

Thank you Jam1 for your response. I will know better when I retrieve it from storage what I am talking about. It is too long ago to remember what was working and what wasn't. Meanwhile I will enjoy the forum, This is the first one I joined after all these years. Delighted to see one on HPI products as there is no one here in Canada selling the HPI trucks.
