I really like the lower CG of the Savage X chassis and the upgraded (easier to access) radio box. Two things I thought should have been included in the 25 upgrade. If I swap the TVP from mine to the X ones will all the other parts line up? (is it a direct swap?) and is the radio box a direct swap as well?

welcome to HPISF

you will need the rear cross member for the x

or modify yours, when you lower everything the drive shaft will rub if you do not.

is it that much of a cost difference? I do like the physical size increase of the XL but will the 0.25 engine be sufficient? I bash with my brother in law whose Savage is pretty much stock. I'd hate to be trailing around because of the added weight... but I'm sure the longer chassis length of the XL will give it a considerable more stable stance.... has anyone here done an XL conversion. Minus the tires of course.

BTW if I do a set of X TVP's and X Radio Box, do I need to upgrade the Bulkheads with the Easy Access Diffs and the Easy Access Transmission case or are these optional items that I don't need to have it run okay?

Here is a link to the XL conversion at the SMF store.. http://www.smfstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=31_183&products_id=2082

Also if you go with the XL conversion you have to use the notched cross member that was previsouly posted in this thread...

As for weight i think yes it will ad some weight the XL TVP's are 3mm thick, and longer but I'm not sure on the weight difference.

I agree, if you are going to the X i would recommend to go straight to the XL TVPs. You will like the bigger and longer tvps. Your engine will barely even notice the weight difference. Its not that much weight you are adding, maybe an couple of ounces.

Welcome to the fam. It won't be that noticable when you switch to the new XL TVPs. It will definately handle better and be more stable, but some people say that the turn radius is increased when you run with an ext. chassis. If you switch to bigger rims/tires, that's when you'll notice a difference in speed and accel. If this helps, I made my own TVP's about a year ago and I made them, they finished out to be longer than the XL TVPs. I'm also runnin the 25 motor until I get the money for a bigger one. As far as your question about the easy access trans case and diffs, unless you are gonna upgrade to the 3-speed (if you don't already have one) then the trans case isn't all that important. But, if you are runnin or gonna run the 3-speed, then upgrade to the X-style trans case. It'll make it alot easier if you have to make shift point adjustments to the 1-2 shift point. The 1-2 shift point isn't accessable from outside the case. You have to pull the center gear set out and remove the 3rd gear and 3rd gear clutch and slide the 2nd gear out a little to access the 2nd gear clutch. Now for the diff cases. Since you are already in the mood for upgrade, I definately recommend upgrading to the X-style diff bulkheads. It makes diff rebuilds alot easier and less time. Also, when it comes time to shim the diffs, it makes that alot easier too. I know this is quite a bit to read, but it's some good info to help you get started. And again, welcome to the HPISF family.

P.S. If I missed anything, somebody will fill it in.

one problem going from stock tvps to the X ones i found is if you don't use the new bulkheads and have a roto start then the shock towers create a bad angle for the shaft .......shouldnt be an issue if you are using the pull start.

i have a xl and a 25 just took the xl and a mid tank mod on it so i had the chasis from the xl and took all my 25 and put it in only problem i seen was the engine mount groves into the tvps and the 25 didnt might have to change out the engine plate i had to use the xls and also needed the cross bars with the groves so drives shaft wouldnt rub on engine plate..hopes this help..

i have done the xl conversion on the x platform with great improvments in stability no power loss but it is difficult to do wheelies now as the tires will spin (forward wieght shift rear is lighter) i have also converted my friends old ss with the 25 tvp's to the x tvp's and you will need to clearance only one of the engine plate crossmembers to work it wont rub on the dog bone but it will rub the input to the rear diff. also a side note the xl plates handle better in the air more responsive to input
