The Title says it all. I am working on building a Savage that will do it all. It is going to be all of the following. Better mention I am starting out with a stock Savage X SS.

As fast out of the hole as it can get.
Handle onroad like any non modified onroader.
Handle offroad like a buggy.
Have a top end speed that will run with any truck out there. Buggies included.
And to top it off, be one heck of a Basher!

Simply put, I want my cake and eat it too! Most people I have spoken to tell me it can't be done. That makes it even more appealing to me.

So here is what I need and plan. First I need your input. I don't care if you tell me it won't work. Just tell me why or what you think might work better than my plan. If you've done or tried something like this please let me know what you did, how you did it and if it worked or not.

The first thing I did was lower the CG a bit by simply shortening the springs. Anybody know of shorter off the shelf springs? I then Worked on some camber and Toe settings. I also plan on dropping a 3 speed in it with a 20T clutch bell using the stock 47t spur gear. I think the K4.6 will handle the overdrive but not sure. I am looking at putting Baja Tires on it also. My problem at the moment is I am getting such traction that I am deforming the stock tires something wicked in the turns. Any way of firming up the sidewalls? Will Bja Tires improve this problem?

Ok this is the near future plan. I will be doing more but first I want to get the handleing the way I want it. Any ideas?

Have a great day!!!

well to start with then, i suggest to baja tires. it wont help handling at all. get some bad lands, or mulchers, if you do lots of dirt driving. to get handling start with an RSC (HPI suspension conversion kit), and getting the truck nice and low. HPI big bores, with hellfire shock shafts are a nice touch. this will get you on your way. also id change your gearing out thats a little tall for the stock motor. ive never tried it myself tho, so i may be wrong. Also after those steps are complete make it light! PRC carbon fiber will help you with all your golas you listed.

Thanks for the info! I'll be looking into that conversion kit first. ATM I'm pulling the rear wheel off the grond in hard turns so more traction is not an option. The sidewalls giving way may be giving me just enough drift to keep her from rolling over. So getting that CG down seems like the top priority. Thanks for the tip! Now to find it on Ebay for 99cent. Bwhahahah I wish!!

Sounds like the truck you want has been done by several guys here already. Ask Bankrupter, The Pope NJ, and Savage Sam. They have all built trucks like what you describe, just be prepared to open your wallet if go that route LOL.

Like 88GTA said, the racing suspension conversion is probably the best single investment you can make for handling - sway bars wouldn't hurt either, and they're pretty cheap. You can limit your ride height for practically free by sticking "spacers" on the shock shafts inside the cylinder. A lot of people just cut 1/2" or so pieces of fuel tubing and slip them on the shafts. That will keep the shocks from extending all the way.

Now that shock tip is a piece of gold. I will go for that and the Racing suspension kit is within my budget. The sway bars where in my plans but that's a great link. Thanks for posting the links. I would hate to drop a C note for the wrong Items. LOL

I definitely can't take credit for the shock thing. The only reason I even found out about it is because the used roller I bought already had it done, and I wanted to convert them back to full travel.

I bought my RCS and sway bars (along with some other stuff) from TCS. It's a great shop, and they have the lowest prices around on a lot of savage stuff.

if u want power get a rag moded picco .28 and u will have more then u will ever need talk to robin purenitro on here

sounds like a wicked project bro, imma keep my eye on this thread and watch your build progress.

i was about to edit his post till i read your post fred, and for future reference to our members pure nitro is no longer a vendor or member so has no association with us at all anymore................

Pikester, what is your budget for your build?

if you got the coin for it, i recommend the Platinum R/C Products Extended Carbon Fiber TVP.

Strongest element on the planet and light as plastic.

My budget? That depends on the week and the weather. I was looking at spending around $500.00 on things. That wouldn't include the engine though. I figure the mill will be the last thing I drop in it. There I'll end up dropping another few hundred. But this is a casual thing. I like to add something and see what it does rather than buy it all in one shot and boom, Game over.

Call me a noob, I was thinking that because it says extended I may need new bones for the front and rear drives. Seeing you have it, could you explain just what is extended? I was looking at plopping this http://www.tcscrawlers.com/HPI-Savage-Suspension-Conversion-Set-87245-p-17706.html onto my truck before going for the LCG Standard or extended. You know if I will run into compatability trouble? Any thoughts on the build?

naw its a great question. all savage models (standard, EXT or XL) share the same measurement from the motor plate forward, therefore they all use the same length front dogbone.

the extended tvps are extended about 1.5" behind the motor, XL tvps are extended appx. 2" behind the motor so yes, they need a longer dogbone. the ext tvps come with the ext dogbone you need to run your truck.

the suspension conversion kit is awesome (especially combined with lcg-ext, tvps. changes your roll center to handle more like a truggy.

here's my prc ext lcg flux:

Nice Truck!!! Way to clean for me though. 😉 Tell me about your shocks!! Just what I'm looking for!! You also have the lcg kit i mentioned don't you?

Nah, the flux doesnt have the suspension conversion. Doesnt really need it caz it has the integy setup & its too over-powered to really benefit by the conversion anyway. here's the build thread https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11813

shocks are rears off of a hotbodies d8t

the suspension conversion was on my nitro savage which had flm lcg ext tvps. the thread is here https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8010

truck was awesome but i parted it out & sold it when i got the flux and lost interest in nitro.

Just a quick update. I just broke my Savage! Was testing a new lower CG using fuel line in the shocks to keep it down. I was running it on the street to see at what point it would flip or slide and doing tons of brakeing. Needless to say. A pad came off and on the next run, NO BRAKES and one broke Savage after kissing the curb at a nice pace! Now reading..... https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15832&highlight=breaks&page=4 A lot of good opinions and options for new brakes in this thread.

So new brakes and maybe even new aloy arms are the first things to go on the truck. Will let you know when I get it fixed. :-/

I would put plastic arms back on. The stock plastic has a flex to it. The alloy doesn't flex. You hit something with plastic it will give a little and go back to its shape. You hit something with alloy it will bend and become a paper weight.

look into the RPM arms, there lighter then stock and way more durable and are backed by a awsome warranty, I'm running them now and love them...

Pikester,
we will need to meet up before you start laying out cash for parts. I have a tool box drawer full of goodies that I don't mind parting with. I also have the PRC set-up if you want to see it in person before dropping cash on it.

Checking them out Shaun, thanks for the tip. I saw them before and was wondering if they where any better than stock.

Neohio,
I'll drop you a line and we can get together. Would be nice to chat a bit and let you get the smell of Nitro back on your clothes!!
