Hi All,

Ok, so I am almost ready for engine break in. I am trying to get all my info ready for this procedure.

I am reading manuals, posts on the forum, etc.

How do you read engine temps?

Do you place your device close to the engine, 1 inch, 2 inches, etc?

Thanks!
Rob

You take the temp meter and point it into the head at the glow plug. When you start break in turn the high speed needle about a half turn clockwise. This will help keep the engine running during break in. Also make sure that your idle screw is set correctly, when you look down into the carb there should be about 1mm space when it is shut.

You sit the device on the cooling head where the glow plug is. Make the device touch it so it gets a better reading. Good luck with break in.
This is vague to a degree as close as you can but don't let the sensor touch anything.

get yourself a temp gun, a temp gun for around $30 will get you a good one with a laser, the closer you are the more accurate and as you get further away is gives you a percentage your below for that distance. It's a good investment

i always thought it was more accurate from taking the temp from here;

if you take it from the head just by turning the gun a few degrees off will give u a false reading, if you take the temp from where i circled in the pic it gives you a more acurate reading since u know its at the top of the case.

See, this is why I posted, I am seeing different ways on youtube as well.

Glow plug is normally the hottest part of the mill. But allot the temp guns can't get close enough to read them right, as the head obstructs them. The pic above is the spot where you can get the gun the closet and get a good reading. I check in a few spots but on the fly the glow plug is good enough. You don't tune with the temp gun ever. Its just s reference tool!! So what is says is only relevant if you have no clue what you are doing and its over heating. I only use them when its cold out and you need to wrap the head to retain heat. Or overly hot out and to tell you when its time to let it cool and lay off the beatings for a bit. If your taking a reading and truing a needle do to what the gun says you will destroy your mill. Smoke / speed is the only way to tune. Just put that in the back of your head. Anyone that tells you otherwise is a noob and is clueless!

this is how you tune... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma2_CghxiUk Watch it through you will see no temp guns used. Do as it says and your mill will not be hot or cold other then do to outside temps being in extreme ranges.

Here you will see me run in my Picco today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0IV3kiUR00
I am only using the temp gun to control how the tape is covering the head to maintain the range of 210-230F I was shooting for. I also leaned it to maintain a good idle and at the end you will see me check for oil out the pipe. As I show it is 20.0 degrees fahrenheit Or -6.66 degrees C and for this I keep my gun handy had it been 65 - 70 F out I know that mill would have been in the temp range w/o the gun.

that's duct tape. but Ive used kid socks with the toe cut out, tin foil, soda cans in half with the bottom concave part dremeled out you name it.
