I just got my savage 4.6 Friday. Tried to start it yesterday to break it in and it wouldn't start. So I spun the flywheel and it would turn until it'd get to the top then it would get stuck. My toto start which was fully charged wouldn't even turn the engine over. So we took the cooling head off and we found where it was sticking at. But I have no idea how to go about the situation. Has anyone ever had this trouble with there savage?

loosen the glow plug a bit and start it, when is running tighten it back up. it is common on new trucks to have to do this a couple times till it breaks in a bit...

That tightness at the top of the rotation is called the "pinch" and it is usually a sign that the engine is in good condition. When it starts loosening it may be time for a rebuild.

Well now I have a bigger problem the damn roto start shaft tip broke off in the engine this thing is a pain in the butt

that's from the engine being new and very tight, did you loosen the glow plug first ? that unit is not meant to have a ton of torque put to it upon starting......

No after it broke I got on here to see if anyone replied then I read what tall said and was gonna try it when I got another starter shaft. Hopefully hpi knows something does anyone have their number?

their support number should be in your manual......either that or take it to your shop where you bought and see if they can help with getting one for you....

Alright so I'm going to need to take the engine out to get the tip of the nitro start shaft out so is there anything special I need to do when I put the engine back in?

you may be able to use a pick to remove that broken shaft remnant from the :ercm: without even taking it outta the chassis
but if you do remove the :ercm: then pay careful attention to setting the gear mesh correctly, there outta be a diagram in your manual detailing the steps to getting it right......

I took it out it was nice and lodged in there I have the motor out so I thought I'd go through it. I get it all disassembled but the back plate because the loctite they used was so stout that it stripped my Allen key pretty upsetting that right out of the box it doesn't even run

I have a question for you, did you read the manual completely and do everything that it said to do, most of the problems you are having are covered in detail in that book of knowledge....
if you did not I suggest stopping and reading and rereading it a few times to gain some basic know how, and I would invest in a good quality hex driver set and a couple other good tools like a good #2 and #1 phillips screwdriver and a long flathead for tuning the engine and making adjustments, as a retired professional mechanic I can say good tools are half the battle when repairs are needed......

if you need help please do not hesitate to ask on the forum...... most of the guys are more than willing to help with problems...

A light coat of white grease on the starter gear inside the case, and if you removed the piston from the engine then always a light coat of oil on both parts prior to reassemble, other than that just blue locktite any screw threading into metal and put it together........

Alright I really do appreciate it I'm just new to this nitro thing and you'd think that a brand new truck would actually start coming straight out of the box

My son got a savage 4.6 a few years ago and the trims were all way off, the idle gap was wrong and it hardly ran at all. to top it off 2 runs in and it ate the rear and front differential gears so it is always a good idea to check and recheck a new truck to make sure everything is right.... besides look at all the knowledge you gain from it... 😀

This is my 2nd savage. I learned wa6 back when I was a wee nitro lad 😉 , to check everything 2x, even the things not mentioned in the manual. About a week or 2 ago, I started my savage, was tuning the tranny abit, and when I went to restart, the nitrostart just free spinned. After I finished cursing, calmed down, and removed the backplate, I found the set screw in the one way bearing/collar came out.
Check, check, and check again. Locktite ALL metal on metal screws. As stated above, those trims, in my experience, are never set right out of the box. Stay with it my friend, nitro is very fun

After many years, I still made the crucial mistake and missed that one unseen screw. Just shows how easy the smallest detail can shut down a day of fun.

I ordered all new parts for my motor, pretty sad cuz it hasn't even ran yet. But I was looking at my pipe and there were metal grit in it is that supposed to happen I wouldn't reckon so

well if it were me I would seek help from the place you got it, either that or contact HPI and see if they would be willing to help you out, I also would take pictures and for sure find where those metal shavings are from there could be shavings in the :ercm: bearings also and if so those bearings are gonna have to be replaced also, I urge you to contact HPI or their distributor or the hobby shop where you purchased the rig at......

well LRP, Axial, OS, OFNA, Dynamite and many others will fit the rig, you will have to reuse the flywheel and clutch and bell on the new engine, but I am curious as to why you would not seek help anywhere for possibly warranteeing the engine, if you can before you "throw it out the window" post up some detailed pics of the shavings and engine it would be nice......

Many of the guys here are running the LRP .28 engine , you can find them on e bay for 160-190 range

Alright sweet and because my dumb self tried to drill out a stripped out back plate bolt and I messed it up that's why I bought the new parts

My K4.6 wouldn't start either. After flooding it and pulling/checking glow plug and clearing excess fuel I found that high speed needle was set 4 1/4 turns out. Trial and error and adjusting it finally started with high speed needle at 3 turns out.

Now that it is running make small changes to the needle in 1/12 increments to bring it into tune.....

I ended up get Lrp .28 this thing is a monster now broke in tuned up and starts 1st pull I've had so much trouble with this thing out of the box but now I really don't care just happy that the thing finally runs
