I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions...I recently put a 3 speed trans in my Savage X. When I took the spur gear off, the slipper clutch pad was cracked slightly. I put everything back together with the old slipper clutch and adjusted as per instructions. It ran for a bit but than started to slip and stopped moving all together. I noticed that the the nut had backed off from where I had it set. My questions are: should I go with a heavy duty spur gear, and if so, do I have to replace the clutch bell as well? What size clutch bell goes with 47 tooth HD spur gear? How should I set the adjustment for the slipper clutch, and should I loctite the nut? Any input would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

You will need to replace the slipper pad. For tightening the nut, I personally tighten it all the way down. If you prefer to back the nut off, only do it about an 1/8th of a turn. I do not loctite the nut becasue the nut should have nylock. If your nut does not have the nylock, then replace the nut. Here is a link for a SG/CB chart which will tell you what sizes are compatible. https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3867

I have only used plastic spurs and have not had any problems, just make sure the mesh and alignment is set correctly. If you decide to upgrade to a steel spur gear, I recommend you will need to get a hardened steel CB becasue you will tear up a regular CB with a steel spur. Personally I would stay with plastic..its much cheaper. Hope this helps you out.

All the way locked down for me too.. I run Hd spur and racing bell. Never killed one from noob to now. But also keep it meshed and have good throttle control. I have also had a cracked slipper pad go for gallons without issues. But again my set up will not slip at all.

Thanks for the input Allan...I was going to stick with plastic. Like you said, much cheaper. So you say to tighten the nut all the way down? I know it wasn't like that out of the box. I will try it. Hoping the lhs has these parts as I do not feel like waiting for them from Tower. Thanks again.

if your lhs deals with HPI they will more than likely have an SG for you and that will come with the new slipper pad. stick with plastic SGs
