There has been a lot of debate regarding batteries and the MMM ESC. This sytstem comes standard in both the TRaxxas E-Revo brushless and the HPI Savage FLUX HP. The hpi manual states that you should run 25C or better LiPo's. Running less may cause damage to your batteries. Here is the problem...
The "C" rating from company X is calculated @ 70% capacity retention under a certain load, and company Y uses 90% capacity retention under a certain load creating say a "C" rating of 30 for each company. Since there is no standard in TRUE "C" rating, company Y could call theirs TRUE as could company X, however, since company Y uses 90% retention there "C" rating is a higher standard. Since X uses 70%, their "C" would be more like 22 or 24, just roughing it. So just because you buy a pack that says 28C, 35C, 18C, or whatever else is available, it doesn't mean that you are getting what you think you are paying for.
We @ SMC guarantee that each and every pack offered by our company is rated @ 90% capacity retention.
If we say our 24C pack works great with the MMM ESC system, this does not mean that another company's 24C pack is equivelant to ours. There are only 2 companies using 90% capacity retention, and we are 1 of them. I will not come on here and bash or put down another company, that is why no comparisons by brand name are being used. It is apparent though that there are several brands that have negative feedback on rctech.net in a thread about the best 3s LiPo's on the market. I saw a few defects while @ the No Limit R/C World Finals 2 weeks ago. I personally had a defect in a pack. That was the only SMC issue I knew of or was informed of all weekend.
Our 3400mAh 18C 11.1v pack has been a hot topic as of late, and not in a good way. HPI has tested this pack in the Flux with ZERO issues! We, SMC, have tested this pack with ZERO issues. SMC nor HPI is recommending this pack or advising it's usuage. I personally use the packs from time to time and have not had a problem with the batteries, the motor, or esc. I'm not saying that something negative can't happen, I'm just giving info on my experience.
There are a lot of satisfied customers on rctech, rcuniverse, and here on the savageforum that use our 24C 5200mAh packs. It's not a 25C, but it performs to optimum standards.
Good Luck to everyone. I hope I have not offended anyone by anything I have posted. I just want to clear the air on a few "possible" issues. If you use SMC products, thank you for your support and for being a customer. We have new packs in the works at all times, and we strive to bring the best possible product to the consumer. I think we have acheived that on many levels, and that's not SMC talking, it's our long lines of faithful hobbyists that enjoy and thoroughly use our products.
Thanks,
Bryan @ SMC
