Hi

I was trying to take my engine totally apart last night for the first time however i CANT get the sleeve out it moves for about 1-2 mm but then it gets stuck. I have a 4.1 big block stock engine. the sleeve has no part to hold and pull either.

I tried everything (believe even stuff that i shouldnt be doing) but its not coming off...

I see the crankshaft has spots on them looking like rust spots and the piston has some burn marks on top (i don't know if this is normal)
I don't know if i should be changing any parts even if i should try even more to take it and risk damaging the sleeve further in the process. (it has some scratches at the bottom of it.)

i don't think right now i have the budget for it.

Can you guys help me?

Thanks

Try puting a cable tie in the exhaust port on the back of thew engine, then turn the flywheel, the cable tie will get trapped between the piston and sleeve and the presure you put on the flywheel will push the sleeve up so you can then carefully pull the rest out. 😱)

i can almost assure you that wont work :/

the reason for the scratches on the bottom is me (some careful and careless hammering, shouldnt have done it..)

even that didnt make it get out.

I was getting so frustrated i even felt like getting a saw and cutting it in half 🙂

i tried putting in hot water but didnt really help

i ll try oven when i get heat resistant gloves 🙂

sounds like u may have done some damage to sleeve

never hammer, pry on your sleeve.

you can heat it up to temp with a heat gun, hair dryer or oven.

Then try to pull sleeve again.

How many gallons have you burned threw it thus far?

what engine is it?

it was stuck even before.

I burned close to 2 gallons

its been such a long time and I am a big newbie so i might have done something wrong in the break in.

it was running fine. However it sat for more than 6 months so i wanted to take it apart before running it again.

It is an HPI 4.1 Big block

In theory it shouldnt need to come apart at 2 gallons

hmmm

so if i put it back together and and if it works fine. I should have no problems. (in theory)

when i took the roto start out (i had to change it)

i also look inside and saw some rust looking spots on the crank shaft and burn marks on the piston. I didnt know what most people meant by "discolored" so i wanted to take out and see it myself.

However if the process is gonna cost me my engine, then i ll let it go for now

the crank can have a little surface discoloration on the end wieght

the piston as well may have some carbon built up

These things are normal imo

put some oil down the glo plug hole, preheat it and try to start it.

See what ya got.

If it doesn't sound or run normal the look for problems.

will do

i guess it was already not smart to take it apart without having any problems.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Always worked for me, :resp:

i put the engine back together. Sprayed some oil on it. The top plate was pretty hard to put back in. I did it eventually.

However after putting the top plate, heat sink and the bolts on i realized there is an air leak. on the rotostart side of the top plate only. It looks like a pretty major leak. I saw it from the oil bubbles coming out from the corner. I have both of the rings in but maybe since it was so hard to put it in there it didnt fit in properly. I ll try to take it apart today and put it back together.

I looked at the articles on how to seal engines but they don't say anything about the top plate. Can I use the same method to seal?

Thank You

top plate? you mean the back plate or the head button where the plug goes?
if its the head leaking it may not be on corectly or seated right. and all ways tighten the bolts in a "X" pattern.

its the head button with the glow plug.
Yeah thats what i was thinking. I wanted to do that again last night but my cheap allen wrench got useless. So i am going to buy some proper allen wrenches today and do it again.

What if it doesnt work though? even if its seated right it still leaks? Anything else i can do in that matter?

i put it back together last night and it seems to be fine. There are some oil bubbles forming around the piston (i can see it from the exhaust) but i cant do anything about that. Everything else seems fine.

Thanks everybody i wont be touching the sleeve for sometime.
