Hi

Just as well as keeping the slipper clutch spring all tightened down, couldn't one just skip it in the first place, and just tighten the bolt wihtout the spring?

You could, but it's there as a failsafe, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Also, it's good to have a bit of slip. I have mine backed off about 1/4 turn

No need for the quarter turn backed off. Even locking down the slipper will slip given a hard enough hit. That's why it's used the way it is. You want the ability to cut off damage, but only when needed, otherwise you want all your power going to the ground.

I have mine fully compressed then a hair more, but not knuckled down like a wheel nut.

I started with mine backed off a half turn (too much) and kept gradually tightening it between runs until it wasn't slipping under power any more. I feel that this way the slipper is as loose as possible without sacrificing power to the wheels.
