should I break it in

Banging my head against the wall with trying to tune an XL I got for free.

Would it benefit me in anyway if I tried going through the break-in process again? I do not know if the truck was broken in properly or broken in at all.

Jay

doing the breakin process would not be a bad thing, but one of the things you want to do to help you with the tuning is to reset all the needles back to factory settings. You will need to do this anyway if you redo the break in procedure. Check for leaks or pinholes in the fuel lines. There are also some air leak points on the K5.9(assuming thats the engine you have). Good luck and keep us posted.

Always break in a motor even if you got it used check for pinch if it has it break it in. You never know. And congrats on the free savage.

You lucked out on a free XL. I wish mine was free LOL. Start from factory settings and do the break-in according to the manual if you have it. I think it only took like 3 or 4 tanks. It is not the most preferred method for a lot of people but it worked fine for me. What problem are you having exactly? Not starting? Overheating? Trouble getting it to idle? Give us a little more info on what the problem is so we can help you out more.

sorry guys forgot to mention that I have seen the previous owner run the truck several times. He pretty much got fed up with it b/c it runs like crap.

I sealed the engine and replaced the lines and started retuning the xl from factory settings. No matter what I do to the truck there is a significant lack of acceleration and power. There is also very little pinch compared to my X's. Other then that the truck idles stable.

So I started from scratch again and I continue to get the same results.

from 200f - 290f the results:

there is a considerable lack of perfromance and throttle response. At full throttle it runs like it is tuned extremely rich and it cannot get any more performance. But the truck idles completely normal.

If the previous owner did not break it in properly, is there a possibility that the engine is just garbage now? Any other areas I should consider looking at?

All tuning was completed with a sealed engine, new lines, and new glow plug

Have you had a chance to look at the clutch shoes, or the diffs?

My RC10GT was almost running the same way, except the engine was revving. I tightened up the diff, and it started running like a bat out of hell.

How far have turned the HSN in? How many turns? It just sounds like it's rich on the high side to me. If it is idling good then you LSN is probably close enough for now. Is you MSN flush with the carb body? make sure it is! I would try leaning the HSN more, if your getting good revs and it is still not running good then check all your drivetrain, clutch, trans, diffs etc. If your motor is not spooling up though it might just be too rich. When you count how many turns in on the HSN, start counting with the bottom of the black plastic knob even with the groove in the HSN body then turn it in 1.5 whole turns clockwise, and go from there as a start. If it is still not revving good then turn the HSN clockwise some more, 1/12 turn at a time (clock-hours). You should be able to get it running decent even is it has lost some pinch. Good luck with it.

Rody,
What exactly do you mean by tightening up the diffs? Shimming?

The clutch shoes look good.

Mike,
from stock setting I had turned the HSN in 2 turns in and it was at about 290f.
The MSN is a little in from flush, maybe 1/12. I tried your idea of lining up the pin holes on the MSN up with the HSN.

The symptoms made me think that it was running rich, but with the high temps, the hanging of the idle after WOT, and almost maxing out the HSN to hpi specs I don't know anymore lol.

Yeah if it was running that hot and hanging at idle your probably right, it sounds lean. Have you tried different plugs? Maybe the plug you are using doesn't like the weather conditions you live in? I don't know man, kind of a wierd one. So even when it was running really hot it still acted like it was rich? Maybe something is binding in the drive train after all.

Mike,

I tried different plugs as well, but I run the same plugs on both of my X's and they run perfect.

At the stock setting I could tell it was running really rich b\c of the performance. When I turned the HSN it improved a slight amount, but it performed like it was at the stock setting still. If that makes sense.

I havnt taken apart the diffs yet to check those, they don't sound like there is anything broken in there, but I did remove the 3 speed and noticed that it was very sloppy. By that I mean I can wiggle the gears around. It seems as though the bearings holding the gears have expanded to a larger diameter then the shaft. You think that may be an issue?

Hahaha maybe I inherited a XL that is going to be my spare parts truck/paper weight.
