wanting to upgrade servos and power supply. i have a cheap LiPo 3s i believe. can i usew that and add in a step down of some description ? is this what you experianced guys do? I understand enough to be dangerous so any advise banter or critasisum is welcome . i should add. HPI save 4.6 old school salvaged from the shed. pic is a battery i have that was for a boat i built

The problem with that solution is the amp output of the regulator. Higher end servos can sometimes pull around 5-7 amps so you would need a more beefy regulator, something like the castle ones.
 
Right, I would also recommend a castle bec 2.0 it can handle it all, from 6 to 58v and 15 amps. They're great.
