Well, I finally encountered a diff problem. Broke 2 teeth off the pinion gear. Was out running, doing a couple jumps, then I noticed when I braked I would get a horrible noise, similar to the noise I had on my t maxx, which was the plastic axels. Not long after the truck locked up, took a quick look, seemed ok, start running and now only had rear wheel drive. I get home to find the pin which holds the outdrive cup on the tranny had snapped. So that wasn't so bad, quick fix I thought.
Took the truck out again and still was getting the noise when I braked, I knew something was wrong. So I shut the truck off. lock up the brakes and put the rear wheels on the ground.and try to roll it, its ok no noise, put the front wheels down, and I get the noise.
So I opened up the diff and the internal gears are ok, then I looked at the pinion and there was 2 teeth missing. As well the bearings which go on the diff, well one completely grenaded, little pieces of partial ball bearings imbeded into the housing. SO I got it all cleaned up and back together, but one word of CAUTION!!! I noticed when I rebuilt the diffs, in the manual is shows two shims between the diff cup and bearing, well from factory hpi only puts one shim, which caused an inconsistant mesh between the ring and pinion, the whole diff would move side to side, when the diffs are built properly with the two shims on either side this will correct the problem and save you from rebuilding the diffs so often. This most likely caused the diff to fail, as the ring would move away from the pinion enough to make the gear snap.
