savage engine blew up :(

hi all,
I was hoping to get some help here.
this is my first post ! so thanks for any help !
I was having problems tuning my truck the last few times I took It out.
then it went all bad. see pics.
the engine kind of self destructed.
looks like the shaft that connects the piston to the rod broke bits of that fell and jammed between the crank shaft and the body of the engine and I think that sudden stop broke the pin that connects the flywheel / crankshaft to the back plate where the starting gears hook up.

my poor engine!! *cry* !!

I only had about 1/2 gallon of fuel ran through this engine, little shocked to see this happen.
never ran this engine lean or hot.
did hpi by the book break in ( read on your site after that this is not the best)

not sure how I did this, defect is my first thought.
just played with the truck never really ran it all that hard.

can this engine be rebuilt?
or should I just buy another?

Well unfortunately that looks to be wasted, it will be far cheaper to just replace it.....

Look into an LRP .28 for a replacement, they tune easily and are a powerhouse for not that much price wise, I have seen them as low as $$159.00 on e bay so if you look you can get a decent deal, and yes your flywheel and clutch will go right on that so the swap over will be pretty easy too....

The starting pin didn't break off, it's only held in position by the back plate. Though the spring appears to be missing. Can you give us more pictures of the back plate? I can see a mounting hole is broken. Hard to tell what else is damaged there from your picture.

Depending on how much is damaged, alot of people opt to buy a new engine. A new engine is often not much more expensive than the parts.

I can't really get a pick of the damage, but i can see the bar that connects the piston to the crankshaft is broken when i look through the exhaust port.

Will the little gear box on the back of the engine the starter shaft goes In will that fit the lrp.28 also?
