Well I got my first RC truck about a week or so ago. Its a savage x 4.6 RTR. I was wondering a few things. The brakes suck they wouldn't adjust far enough to do anything so I added a small piece of tubing which made it a little better. When I adjust them where it will stop really good they drag. Any ideas how to help this? Also, What is something I can get thats like a fail safe? Something in case the batteries go dead it won't go crazy. One more thing. Which it better - The tuned pipe from HPI or the Tuned Ripped pipe? Whats the difference? Thanks for the help guys! I'm so glad I got a savage!

well in a way its the failsafe and in another way its not.........first well failsafes don't like most stock (cheap) am radios because of the poor signal quality and second as in my experience they are not to fond of AA batteries,a decent hump pack will help(i run a venom failsafe and a venom hump pack)
You may need a shorter piece of fuel tubing. Trim just a slight bit at a time. If your sliding in the dirt, your fliping on the street. Not to sure on the pipes, I still run the stock one.

sometimes the screws for the brake calipers come loose,( you can get to the top one if u use a really long screwdriver and go through the rear of the truck to get to it! and the bottom one is right handy when u flip the truck over!!) i tightened mine up and switched out the spring on the brake linkage for a piece of fuel tubing just a bit longer then the spring and wham it flipped over when i braked, so i had to tone it down a bit!!! (should mention I'm running a hump pack as well so it helps the servos a bit!) as far as exhausts, I'm willing to bet most will say the normal hpi tuned exhaust is better then the ribbed but I'm running the ribbed and i like it alot actually, but it is louder then some other exhausts i will admit and sounds totally different then the other exhaust mentioned!!!

hope this helps ya a bit buddy!!!!! if not I'm sure someone with even more knowledge here on the forum will come to the rescue, good luck!!!!

The bar that goes onto the transmission has a flat spot ground into it. I have found that the bar wears down to the point where it takes more travel to aply the breaks then the servo can provide. replacing the bar only costs a dollar or 2 though. Also give your brakes a clean with some isopropyl alcohol. That will bring back the bite really quickly.

I found that the Ofna linkage mod helped the brakes immensely.
Clicky to thread

Also the charge state of your battery is of utmost importance!

I also upgraded to the HPI dual SS brake setup - Now I have a hard time not endo-ing it on pavement!

Thanks guys. I will try tightening the caliper screws and see if that helps. I am also running a hump pack. Could somebody help me figure out something about the failsafe thing. I don't really even know how it works. My bro's Tmaxx has a spring on the throttle so theres no way it can hang up....

Yeah, Sorry I was talking about explaining more of what an aftermarket failsafe does. What does it connect to on the truck?

Where are the screws for the brake calipers?

Tighten the 2 screws (Z280) that sandwich the pads (metal pieces - 86075) and the fiber disks (pink pieces - 87055) located at the rear output shaft of the transmission. (Bottom, driver's side, rear of the transmission)

The aftermarket failsafe connects between the radio and throttle servo. You unplug the throttle servo connector (Ch. 2 I think, just follow the wire or look in the owner's manual) and plug it into the failsafe and plug the failsafe into the throttle connection on the radio box. To set up the failsafe follow the manufacturers directions. It applies the brakes if your truck recieves another signal or the battery goes below 4 volts. I run a Venom Failsafe and it s*$t the bed after a few tanks (started twiching the wheels and no throttle response) but I'm still going to get another one and try it again.

If you have'nt done it yet. Do the Ofna throttle/brake mod. Upgrade your steering servo and replace the throttle with the old steering servo. This will make a world of diff. Just the Ofna throttle mod will make a huge diff.

ntenc1- Could you explain what that is. I have read about it on here but I still don't understand what it is.

It is a mod that changes out the OEM throttle / brake linkage. It looks like this:

And here is the info:

this is on tower hobbies. i had my lhs attempt the ofna mod and it's all jacked up. i'm going to give it a whirl now. this should be all that i need right???

LXBL85 Ofna Linkage Sliders Kit Blue (2)

LXMSK2 HPI Brake Linkage Set

Definitely go with the ofna mod. It would cost you about $12 but makes the throttle and braking much smoother. It really should be a stock setup from HPI. It will take you about 20 mins to do the upgrade, but its well worth it.
Like tractorman said, the failsafe goes on the throttle servo. You have to set it to the position you want, usually full brake and straight steering, in the event that you lose the radio signal or you rx batteries go low. It prevents runaways, and is well worth it. There is nothing worse then having to chase your truck when its running full throttle away from you.
Good luck and congrats on the new truck.

This is the best way to do it! Some ppl do it half a$$. This is a very good way to get the whole effect of the mod. Looks good Moto!

Here's a slight modification of it, and you can see the full kits here. Front and back.
