Hello I recently picked up a new old stock Savage 25. Has anyone replaced the diffs with the bullet proof 29/9? Is it possible? And was also wondering what diff shim dimensions to use. I know I can use .1mm .2mm and .3mm but what diameter? Part numbers would be helpful. Thank you

By searching on the HPI website you will find that it can be done, for shims you'll need those: Z877 and Z892, both are 0.2
Since you're messing with the diffs, you might as well get the alloy diff case part nº 86827 and some new bearings B032 and B085

The stock diffs should be fine if you're going to keep the .25 engine in it. Lets see some pics of the NOS Savage 25.
I just bought it on ebay. It should be here Tuesday. Here are two ebay pics.

The 9/29t diffs are a direct replacement for the 13/43t version. The 9/29 comes with the 4 bevel gear upgrade and alloy diff cases as standard. The main difference apart from the gear ratio is that the 13/43t uses a B032 10x16x5mm bearing on both sided of the diff were as the 9/29t uses a B085 8x16x5mm on the crown wheel side & a B032 10x16x5mm bearing on the case side.
The shims to use on each side of the diff if using 9/29t are (Z877) 8x10x0.2mm (x2) on the crown wheel side between the bearing and crown wheel & (Z892) 10x12x0,2mm (x2) on the casing side between the bearing and the casing.
The 13/43t setup with the plastic casing does not use any shims, they are only used with the 9/29t alloy case setup.
You may want to add an extra shim to both sides as I find that the 2 each side as stated by HPI isn't enough, I use 3 shims each side making the shim thickness 0.6mm both sides.
The Savage 21 & 25 were the only 2 Savages to be released without the 4 gear spider setup in the diffs The Savage 3.5 & X although still came with plastic diff cases had the 4 bevel spider gears as standard. All Savages from the Savage X4.6 onwards came with metal diff cases as standard.
The ratios between both diff setups are very similar with the 13/43 being 3.30 & the 9/29 setup being 3.22. The main reason for the change from a 13 to a 9 tooth pinion was to try to stop eliminating the gears from stripping due to the larger engine sizes being offered from HPI. Remember the Savage was released with a 3.5cc (Savage 21).
