Has anyone elses roto start had grease coming out the front of it? Looks like mine had some gray grease ozzing out the front today.

mine does that too, ive been using it for almost 7 months, and haven't had any problems. i put a 3000mah battery cell in it, and that gives it waaaayyyyy to much kick. it almost twisted out of my hand when my engine stopped turning.

Thats fairly normal, they seem to over pack it with grease from the factory.

I just had mine off and opened it up and JAM PACKED it with some Molly based bearing grease... their are no seals on them so nothing will stop the grease from oozing out over time...

Well after a week of my WELL GREASED ROTO START.... I have learned that its NOT such a good idea to add grease to the ROTO START!

Apparantly the grease causes the One way bearing to start to slip .... And now it does NOT grip all the time... I'm going to try to clean the grease out and see if it starts to grip again... but Just an FYI...if you want to add grease to the Roto Start... just a dab will do it!

Well got the ROTO start cleaned up and removed all the excessive grease I had so brilliantly gobbed inside... the one way bearing seems to be gripping again... the bad news is while I was removing the engine, 2 engine mount screws broke off rendering the motor mount worthless... LOL so now I'm waiting for a new one to get in... Its funny how one thing leads to another... and my actions created more problems then what I began with. Its a learning experience... and it didn't cost me too much.

I don't thing that is GREASE oozing from your ROTO start.

I actually think its just build up a FUEL and dust collected over time... The ROTO start DOES NOT have any grease inside of it... just two gears no lube, they are DRY and for good reason. If any grease gets on you "ONE WAY" bearing it will slip... I had to take mine out twice, the second time I made sure it would be the last and soaked it in Rubbing Alcohol several times... It now works but what a PITA!

yes it was originally for the roto start.

Seems mine isn't doing it now, so who knows.

I thought so-I just feel bad for Air Ram as it seems he thought is was the backplate and ran into problems because of it.

I'm not sure what you mean by running into problems with the "BACK PLATE".... I literally removed my Roto start and took it apart... had the great idea that some MOLY based grease added to the inside of it would some how do it good.

That grease quickly made its way to the One-Way bearing and caused it to FAIL to engage and crank the engine to start.

So I had to remove the ROTO START and literally clean the inside of it to remove ALL the grease I had brilliantly applied to the inside. I had to soak the One Way bearing in Rubbing alcohol to remove all the grease...

It all works now... So I guess the morel of my story is... don't lube up your ROTO START... If you see a grease like build up on your Roto start its NOT from the ROTO start as they are made DRY with no grease. That build up is most likely just fuel/dust that has accumulated over time.

The build up of grease like substance could also be caused by you HEAD not being completely tight and fuel is being compressed out from the bottom of the head and onto your ROTO Start... Please don't ask me how I learned this...LOL

OK now I'm confused. When you say build up from fuel and dust and about the one-way I took it as you were lubing the Roto-start components that are attached to the engine and not the actual Roto-starter itself.
The original thread was about grease coming from the hand held piece so I thought you thought it was the backplate and lubed that part of it and had problems.....

LOL... Yeah I'm confused now also... :duh:

I guess I'm so new at this I don't even know the correct terminology.

When I say ROTO START I'm talking about the part ON THE ENGINE that you stick the electric starter into... It houses the One way bearing and two gears...

At least on E-bay they advertise them as "ROTO STARTS" so I assumed thats what they where called.

So I'm guessing his leak is on the actual hand held unit? In that case I have nothing to offer this thread... LOL Please disregard all my babbling post about grease and Roto Starts.

YEAUP I'm LOST!!

lol Thats what I thought- sorry you had problems because of the misunderstanding.
OK from now on Roto-Starts mean components attached to the engine and Rot-StartERS mean hand held part?
Agreed? lol
At least we will know now not to add lube to Roto-Starts!
