My roto start won’t turn the engine over. When I take the back plate off the one way bearing seems to engage but the starting shaft doesn’t seem to be catching. How does the spring and pin work ?
I found the pin but don’t see a spring . Is it in the hole at the bottom of the crank shaft?
Thanks for any help

Sometimes gunk keeps the spring from pushing the engagement pin out of the hole in the crank shaft.

Roto starts can put more stress on the one way bearing than pull starts, resulting in it wearing. Usually answer is to get new one way bearing. If you like you can also get just the one way bearing without the hex, you then have to press the old bearing out of the hex and press the new in, a vice and small socket bits is what I use. One way bearings from Ina are good.

The spring goes in the hole at the end of the crankshaft, then the pin. It can be tricky reassembling.

Ok Thanks, Is the OWB a 12 mm size. I also need the O ring (1425) as it is missing. Are the INs bearings on Amazon?

My one-way was giving me trouble a couple weeks ago. I tossed it in a can with a little gasoline, swished it around and put it back in. It's worked perfectly since.

Anyway, that's what worked for me.

Hi, my savage x 4.6 seems to have a starting issue. Roto start just spins. I have installed a new one way bearing and reassembled. Unfortunately no joy. Roto start just spins and I hear no compression. Having taken the roto start backnplate off from near the engine again I notice there is no 'O' ring part no 1425 (as shown in my manual). Would the missing 'O' ring be causing the issue of no compression and the roto just spinning?

Is the sprung pin engaging with the starter shaft?

Hi Lokky, thanks for replying. Not t9o sure what you mean when you say sprung pin engaging with starter shaft? I will try and post a pic and or video tomorrow. Thankful for any help and advice from those with more experience than I.

Hi Lokky and all others.

Swapped the way in which the one way bearing was mounted (think I had it back to front!).
I seem to have some compression now but still unable to get the savage started. I can only hear a very slight compression. Can I upload a short video to this forum?

Hi Elwood
Thanks for the above. Very useful. Think I may be missing the O ring part 1425. Would this be the cause? I'm about to order some now. Could the missing o ring be the issue for the engine not turning over, all I'm getting is a slight compression
