REVIEW: HPI Safety Engine Stop System (Part number 85068)
I have been given the opportunity to review, in my opinion, one of the best upgrades you can buy.. I believe these should be a stock part on every truck. First I want to thank HPISF for this opportunity!
Safe and convenient this upgrade has Safety in mind, for both the engine and the operator. The Safety engine Stop system is basically a spring loaded push button that mounts on the Left TVP that turns into a rod with a heavier pad/shoe on the end. When pushed the pad applies pressure to the side of the flywheel causing the engine to safely stop..
There is no more running lean from pinching off the fuel line, which is only recommended in emergency situations anyway and it is impossible to burn your fingers on a muffler that is usually close to 300 degrees Fahrenheit not to mention hot gasses coming from your fingers target when shutting down your engine using the recommended method, closing the exhaust stinger with your finger and a rag. Maybe that’s why they call the exhaust exit the stinger??
Ok, let’s take a close up look at one of this little gem.
You can see the package contains 5 plastic parts, 3 screws and 1 spring
You can see here these parts are keyed to prevent the rod from turning.
This is among the simplest upgrades to install. I have included scans of the installation manual for you to take a look at.
These are the tools needed:
1. Phillips head Screwdriver
2. Knife, file, or sandpaper (for trimming off the plastic left on the rod from the numbered piece the plastic parts came on. This area needs too be sanded so it will slide into the mount easily tip of knife points to area needing smoothed. shown below)
Here’s a picture of the assembly order/parts placement.
Remove these screws shown in picture below, the package contains replacement screws which are a bit longer that are needed for the extra thickness of the safety engine stop systems mount..
Slide the assembly in place and screw in place with the new longer screws. That’s it. Now you are ready to use. Here’s a picture of the system installed and ready to use.
Here is a picture showing the shoe that rubs on the flywheel, it is hard to see so I outlined part of it in red.
When your ready to shut down your engine just push firmly on the button and it will easily stop the engine.
Here’s a short video showing operation
Here's HPI's product page on this item including a better video (wish I had seen this earlier.)

Bonus!! You will also receive 2 extra parts, I ant see needing to replace the button, but I m sure over time the rod/shoe will wear down and need replacement , in any case there is a replacement for both of these parts. HPI is probably the best company I have ever encountered where it comes to including spare replacement (and even some optional) parts, and tools. I don't see that often and cannot think of another company that even compares in that area.
Potential problems.
I have a problem on one of my trucks, I have an extra brace that mounts where where the safety stop system would go, I have not installed it for that reason but I think it could be done with some washers to make a stand off on the area where the brace doesn’t cover. So if you have anything already mounted in this area you may not be able to use this system.
There may be some TVP’s that wont allow the use of this system, depends on if the TVP is open in the area where the rod goes through, and that the location for the mount is spaced the same as on the stock TVP..
I have been using this system on one of my trucks for about 6 months now and have not had any p[problems with it. This system mounts in a place that is fairly well protected from being damaged during crashes but I could imagine it could be damaged in the right circumstances.
Conclusion
All in all I like this system. I highly recommend it for anyone. Especially if you shut your engine down by pinching off the fuel line, as it is not good for the engine. It would also be good for anyone that often burns themselves on the muffler or if your just tired of carrying a oily rag around with you. With a price tag of about $4.00 US dollars you cannot go wrong.
Thanks HPISF
