REVIEW: HPI Safety Engine Stop System (Part number 85068)

SSES_main.JPG

I have been given the opportunity to review, in my opinion, one of the best upgrades you can buy.. I believe these should be a stock part on every truck. First I want to thank HPISF for this opportunity!

Safe and convenient this upgrade has Safety in mind, for both the engine and the operator. The Safety engine Stop system is basically a spring loaded push button that mounts on the Left TVP that turns into a rod with a heavier pad/shoe on the end. When pushed the pad applies pressure to the side of the flywheel causing the engine to safely stop..

There is no more running lean from pinching off the fuel line, which is only recommended in emergency situations anyway and it is impossible to burn your fingers on a muffler that is usually close to 300 degrees Fahrenheit not to mention hot gasses coming from your fingers target when shutting down your engine using the recommended method, closing the exhaust stinger with your finger and a rag. Maybe that’s why they call the exhaust exit the stinger??

Ok, let’s take a close up look at one of this little gem.

You can see the package contains 5 plastic parts, 3 screws and 1 spring

You can see here these parts are keyed to prevent the rod from turning.

This is among the simplest upgrades to install. I have included scans of the installation manual for you to take a look at.

These are the tools needed:

1. Phillips head Screwdriver
2. Knife, file, or sandpaper (for trimming off the plastic left on the rod from the numbered piece the plastic parts came on. This area needs too be sanded so it will slide into the mount easily tip of knife points to area needing smoothed. shown below)

Here’s a picture of the assembly order/parts placement.

Remove these screws shown in picture below, the package contains replacement screws which are a bit longer that are needed for the extra thickness of the safety engine stop systems mount..

Slide the assembly in place and screw in place with the new longer screws. That’s it. Now you are ready to use. Here’s a picture of the system installed and ready to use.

Here is a picture showing the shoe that rubs on the flywheel, it is hard to see so I outlined part of it in red.

When your ready to shut down your engine just push firmly on the button and it will easily stop the engine.

Here’s a short video showing operation

Here's HPI's product page on this item including a better video (wish I had seen this earlier.)

Bonus!! You will also receive 2 extra parts, I ant see needing to replace the button, but I m sure over time the rod/shoe will wear down and need replacement , in any case there is a replacement for both of these parts. HPI is probably the best company I have ever encountered where it comes to including spare replacement (and even some optional) parts, and tools. I don't see that often and cannot think of another company that even compares in that area.

Potential problems.

I have a problem on one of my trucks, I have an extra brace that mounts where where the safety stop system would go, I have not installed it for that reason but I think it could be done with some washers to make a stand off on the area where the brace doesn’t cover. So if you have anything already mounted in this area you may not be able to use this system.

There may be some TVP’s that wont allow the use of this system, depends on if the TVP is open in the area where the rod goes through, and that the location for the mount is spaced the same as on the stock TVP..

I have been using this system on one of my trucks for about 6 months now and have not had any p[problems with it. This system mounts in a place that is fairly well protected from being damaged during crashes but I could imagine it could be damaged in the right circumstances.

Conclusion

All in all I like this system. I highly recommend it for anyone. Especially if you shut your engine down by pinching off the fuel line, as it is not good for the engine. It would also be good for anyone that often burns themselves on the muffler or if your just tired of carrying a oily rag around with you. With a price tag of about $4.00 US dollars you cannot go wrong.

Thanks HPISF

Good review....you guys are going to make me go back and do some editing to mine!!!

I need to get me one of these also, I always have the circle on my fingers from plugging the exhaust.

great review shift point!!! i always wondered just how well that would work, and how hard it was to install and your detailed review answered any questions i might have had!!

P.S...... I really like the fact that most of the people who are doing reviews for hpi are including the part numbers, just wanted to commend you guys on that as its alot easier then having to do a frantic internet search for the product!!

Great detailed review! What would you rate it on a scale of 1-10?

This sounds like a great product I am going to have to get me one. Great review you put alot of detail in your review and the pictures and video just made it better. :resp:

Thanks guys!

I would rate this a 10 out of 10 In every aspect, for sure, I can't see any down sides to it at all, except for the compatability with 3rd party TVP's which is unaviodable. and really a compatability issue for the 3rd party TVP's since this is aHPI product for a HPI product.

Thanks again everyone.

I added a couple things to the review, I forgot one imporntant detial, the price.. and I added a line in the area about the extra parts, oh and while looking for the list price (I didnt find) I found HPI's video of the operation that is a lot better than mine so I added the link.

Nice review bud. I have that on two of my trucks and they are awesome I don't have to worry about my kids hurting themselves on a hot truck. It is worth it's weight in gold and simple to install. I've never had problem 1 in the long time that I've had mine. Product is Highly recommended upgrade IMO. Thanks Wister, HPISF, and of course HPI.

Great review i love my safty stop so much better then plugging the exhaust

Does anyone know if this will fit on my FLM Extended LCG TVP's?

I was just coming to post about this. I tried the one I got in the mail yesterday. It does not fit very well on the FLM chassis. The arm to the lower screw won't reach the screw. The screws that it mounts too are a little further apart on the flm chassis. You also have to trim some plastic off to get it to fit in the hole on the flm chassis. I am going to try screwing the top arm to the chassis and cable tying the lower one and will see if it will still works (if it's in the right position). I don't have an engine in my savage at the moment so I can't really test it.

Great review wister I always wondered how and if it realy worked or if anybody even used it.It looks like I was missing out going to order one now.I run the buku pipe so I burn two fingers insted of one lol.
thanks again you got to love these reviews they answear alot of questions without just spending alot of money on junk :resp:

Yep I got my Christmas present on the weekend so I stripped it checked it and sealed it. Mounted it in the FLM chassis with safety stop and as far as I can see it isn't going to be possible to get the safety stop to work without massive modification. I run exhaust deflectors anyway so I don't burn my fingers so it isn't a biggy for me anyway.

On a side note. Anyone who gets a nice new LRP, CHECK IT OVER. I was a little surprised to find that none of the screws on my engine were even tight. Definitely no loctite to be seen either. I didn't care as I was sealing it up anyway and so it was that much easier. I wouldn't have liked to see what would of happened if I had tried to run it though. The motor does not come RTR.

I think this is a must have for me. Just like a fail safe. Once I found out how good they were I always run one.

Haven't had a chance to try it yet, hoping I get some weather to try it out this weekend.

We still have snow on the ground here, though it should be mid 40s this weekend. If the rain holds off, I should be able to get out and run a bit.

Even if it is wet and nasty, I could always take it up to the tennis court. I DID just buy those 40 series Road Rage tires... :)

anyone ran these and got hit by another truck yet? looks like if another truck hti aroudnt he gas tank ur engine would die on you

I think that perhaps the Safety Stop would be able to kill your truck in a collision, so it might not be the best upgrade for racing, but even then, it'd have to be a pretty hard hit and it'd have to be in just the right spot to do it.

I will say, I used my Safety Stop this weekend and I was AMAZED at how easily it stopped the engine. I figured you would have to press on it reasonably hard and hold it, but you just give it a little jab and it does the trick. I definitely like this method much more than plugging the stinger or pinching the fuel line.
