Hi,

I am pulling my Savage apart
This is the one I am working on

I am pulling it apart for a few reasons, the main thing is I want to get rid of the ALU case’s for the transmission and diff’s, I haven’t had any problems with them, I just want the easy access ones (wish I would have known the difference when I built this).

I would love some recommendations from you guys on what other PM replacements and or upgrades I should do while I am in there.

along with replacing the alu case's I mentioned above, I plan on shimming the diff’s, replacing the clutch shoes with some alu ones (probably Nova’s shoes, mugen springs and nut), installing the high speed gear set and I have some boots for the dogbones to install and that’s about all I can think of other than just cleaning everything up. I have already replaced the alu skid plates with the stock ones (this is a old picture right after I built it), both front and rear alu ones were bent up, I think I managed on bending both of them the first time I jumped it and they just got worsee from there quickly.

One thing I am wondering about, I have read something about filling the diff's inside the cup's with some kind of silicon oil? is this correct? I have never had those apart and don't know if they are filled with any kind of lub that needs replaced or if tey are dry inside.

Anything else you guys can recommend to toughen thing up would be apriciated.

Sounds like you have a GREAT game plan .. One thing I would consider is KEEEPING those bulkheads.. You said yourself you have never tore the diffs apart, That's probably why.. Those alloy bulkheads keep those gears in place.. Ever sence I upgrades tp the alloy bulks I have NOT had any diff problems .. Yea I would still shim them.

The nova clutch is the best clutch IMO I would also get the mugen 1.0 springs along w/ the mugen pilot nut(have a look at my nova review) ..

I run 30,000K diff fluid all around in my diff cups, seems to give me great all around performance and traction.


But all in all its seems to me like you have a nice basher allready .. (do you wanna replace the tranny case b/c you want the easy access kind?)

But I really can't tell do you have alloy a arms .. If so you would probably wanna loose them. You don't need them stock is better IMHO

I think your truck would benefit from a throttle mod . search around fx made a killer post about his throttle mod
Also that exhaust sucks A little birdy is saying BUKU in my ear
 
yea i am a firm believer of ... "if it ain't broke don't fix it". The exhaust would have to go and a new tvp color is in order. I think with some black it would set off some of the purple parts, but who am I to tell you about paint scheme...lol.
 
if you have not already done so i would get rid of the plastic bushings on your steering post and replace them with bearings it makes a world of difference. I agree with SJ i would keep the alum bulk heads and the trany case . Those being alum will not hurt anything it will help you out in the long run . The alum will not flex as much so it will keep your gears in place . I would also have to agree that a throttle and brake linkage mod is the way to go. I built both of the ones that i have and i would not change back to stock for anything. Just my 2 cents

A lot of the things you guys mentioned I have done already, I upgraded the linkage on both of my savages (the other one is mostly a stock X SS) I have also replaced the plastic bushings to bearings in the steering. and that pipe went fast, I ran it for about 5 min's, didnt even finish opff what was in the tank, it was just too loud for me, I don't know if it helped or hurt performance and even if it helped a lot I wouldnt keep it. It is amazing how loud that pipe is. I put a buku on my SS and the polished pipe that came with the ss on this one.

I do have alu arms on this currently, I haven't had any problems with them yet but I figure when I bend them I will replace them, might as well use them while I have them on there.

One change of game plan is I will keep the alu case's on the tranny and diff's, I just wish they were easy access, when someone makes them in alu with the easy access I will probably buy them.

Anybody know id there is a way to drill a hole to access the 2nd to 3rd shift adjustment? I think I am going to play around with trying to make an access point for it, I have never adjusted the shift points so I have no idea how hard it is or how many trys it takes to get it dialed in, I don't think either one of my trucks shift correctly.
 
I think thats the one I have, just it isnt like the plastic ones that have that little hatch in the front, on mine the whole thing splits in half, not all of it but the main housing then there are parts that go from one side to the other, seems like to me it will be a pain to get open.

???
 
Yea that looks like the same ones ... I don't think you have to remove the TVP just the 2 screws that hold the suppot the bulkhead

I will let you know, just seems like one half of the case has to be removed to get to the gears but I cant say for sure don't remember exactly how it went together. Did you build yours or ws it built already? If I remember correctly just about every screw has to be taken out to get it apart, maybe even every screw.
 
I had to build mine! came in pieces.. I think your right one side does have to be removed. Also it is most screws . not very e z access is it .. But still there are a nice bulkhead
 
Oh yeah, I like them a lot, just I didn’t know they were actually doing any good. I have been wondering why I haven’t had any problems with my diff's yet. After reading about the problems others have with theirs I figured they were going to go soon, so I thought I would just put the plastic ones back on while I was in there. I am glad I asked.

The center gearbox is nice too, I will tell you how precise it is (I guess the diff case is the same as it is from the same company) when I first put the gears in the alu case fro the tranny I put a bit of grease in where the bearings are, the case would not close tight, I took it apart a couple times and finally I took it apart and cleaned all the grease out and it fit together perfectly. So just that little (and it was little) amount of grease was enough to keep it from closing.

Another thing I really like on that truck is those integy TVP's they are 6mm thick and feel so strong. I don’t know if it is the tvp's or the shock towers but that truck sits up a lot higher than my stock one, I will have to take pictures of them side by side. what is strange is I am pretty sure I put the tvp up against the stock one and they were the same so I don’t know where the extra height comes from. even though it sits higher it seems to have a more stable ride than the stock one too I guess it is the extra weight.

One thing I do want to get is another Buku for this truck when I can afford it.
 
That is still bothering me a boit, I took some pictures of both of them, it looks like the tvp's are making the difference in height but I am ike 99.9% sure I put them up against the stock tvp and they were the same but I could be wrong. the tires make some difference but it is not what I am talking about.
