hey guys I thought i would share this build with all of you as well since their is a lot of good info on the differences between the old and new Savage X. Hope you enjoy.

My cousin wanted to get her husband a Savage for Christmas this year. So we searched and found one on Crags ?List. From what I could tell it was a "regular Savage X 4.6" For $150.00. When we got their, to my surprise the guy had the original box and manual. I had to do a double take because the box said it came with a dual slipper clutch and a F4.1 mill. Well the mill was toast but the truck was sound and it came with many extras. So we offered the guy $80.00 and took it home.
? ?Now the question I have for you is what are the differences I am going to run into when I break it down and rebuild it so it is ready to go by X-mass?

Link removed do to expiring

Thanks

They did make a 4.1 X, it should have easy access diffs & tranny, but it has plastic diff cups, not metal. it has 1 brake disc, not the dual red fiber disc's. The dual slipper like you said, thats about it,Everything else should be just like an X,, for $80 I'd say you did pretty good,
The add was expired,,,

(Extremsavage)
The diff for 4.1 X came with 4 bevel gears,,
You can change the dual slipper to the single one, Just remove that spur & replace it with the single slipper spur.

(KiZ)
xtreme is pretty much on the money. There is a possibility that it has metal diff cups, because they started throwing them in the box as extras at the end of the X's shelf life. Also the tranny case could be an older slightly weaker style, the revised tranny (with reinforcing ribs) was introduced some time in the X's life.

(groundskygroundagain)
Check the "X" section at the rear of the truck below the engine mount. Early ones had a more pronounced X in this section which had a habit of breaking on a hard landing which is why it was uprated on the later ones with more material in this area. I have 2 chassis with breaks in this area.

(Nitromite)
oh! why is no one mentioning the the duel slipper? I just wanted to know why they do not use this set up anymore? was it junk? bad design? to expensive? why has this disappeared off the face of the earth! I know I can change it back to a single but I am just curious.

(pomplemus)
From what I've heard, it tended to wobble and did not improve performance at all. It was probably also more expensive and heavier, contributing to its demise. It may not necessary to convert it to a single pad set up if it doesn't wobble too much. Wink

I *think* the original X also carried over the slightly weaker 2mm motor plate from the 25, instead of the 2.5mm plate introduced in the Xss.
The X's motor mount also did not come with the engine nose support hole and grub screw.
I don't think that either of these two things should be a problem though. They can be upgraded when they eventually fail...

which they should if it's properly loved! 😀

Here is the original info on the HPI site, with plenty of pictures/part info: Savage X

@ pomplemus great link, that will help w/the rebuild

Here are some pics I took tonight, I also included the other things we got with this savage so you can see what we got for $80.00. It dose seem KiZ was correct about the tranny. I have not started to tear it down yet, so we will find out later about the other stuff.

Thats it!!! Maybe . Do Not Need
3. fuel line just to be on the safe side ($1.99) purchased
4. Mill (take it easy guys, we need a good cheep mill for a beginner) thinking dynamite or axial ?but we are open to your suggestions (Axial .28 S-2) purchased ($120.00)
5. Pipe, bulks X2, metal diff cup X2 that i thought i had but didn't ?$10.00

What do you guys think about shortening the wheel base ?lol
CAM_0360.jpg

Don't Freek Out Pearl!!!

The plastic cup turn out to be true. good call guys
CAM_0370.jpg

That is far from the problem
Don't Freek Out Pearl!!!

While cleaning the bulks I found this..
CAM_0368.jpg

now why would the both of the pins be missing from each bulk (not one single pin)??????????????????????????????????????
HPI what have you done?????

Help guys! why am I looking at this?????
CAM_0369.jpg

Pearl! A screw belongs in the bottom hole. that is not a problem. but their should be a pin that sticks from the bulk and matches with the TVP's. (all four pins are missing) but we will figure this out

Thanks Tuna! send me a PM and I will shoot you my ADDY.

@EXtream the broke guide is not the problem. I am concerned about no pins in the bulks. are they not important? it seams to me they would provide a needed extra support. Was it normal not to have the pins back in the day? I want this Savage TITS when it is opened Christmas day.

Alright Pearl, A minor set back but no biggie. Tuna is hooking you up with a very good deal. So we are back on track!
I got all the parts cleaned up last night (I was up till 3am lol) We will have to wait on the bulks Tuna is sending to really get the build under way, but I think I can get a start on some of the smaller stuff it in the mean time.

OK Pearl I just got done with about as much as I can till we get the stuff from Tuna.
I started with the tranny. I installed the new breaks threw away the duel slipper clutch and replaced it with a new single slipper clutch

CAM_0374.jpg

Next thing I did was gave this Savage a much needed up grade. A stock Savage comes with plastic bushings in the steering posts that don't allow the free movement that these posts need to turn the wheels smoothly. So I threw In some stainless steel ball bearings. now she will turn with ease. Then it was on to the receiver box.

And finally started placing what i could to one of the TVPs'. It is really cleaning up good Danielle says it looks bran new. I think you will be happy when this is finished 😀

(Nitromite)
OK I think I just noticed the X you were talking about on the TVP, I see why that could be a weak point vs the newer ones. still no biggie TVPs' are cheap on ebay if it ends up causing a problem. you were talking about the X on the tvp below the mill mount not the mill plate its self, Right?

BUILD ON

So? It seams TUNA knew something I didn't. It turns out the old plastic cups don't have these
aaaaa.jpg

BUT TUNA SENT THEM 🙂 GOOD LOOKIN OUT

Thanks for the extras Tuna! I will throw them in the box for the lucky man on x-mass day. ?We will make sure we get pics of him opening it up.
CAM_0393.jpg

Time to replace the plastic cups with metal ones
CAM_0394.jpg

This is the ring gear, Tear it apart! don't be scared
CAM_0395.jpg

CAM_0396.jpg

Metal on the right then I did the same to the left
CAM_0397.jpg

this is the pinion gear placed in the bulk
CAM_0402.jpg

Next place the ring gear in the bulk
CAM_0398.jpg

place the back side of the bulk in place

Then the shock tower and shocks
CAM_0404.jpg

OK! now WTH do I do? I am finished and have no truck to work on anymore  Perl we are ready for a Mill as soon as you round up the money. this beast is ready for some major bashing.

I will write more info in awhile. It takes forever to edit and re size all the pics and I am starving

@ Cadimman I was actually gonna ask your guys opinion one that issue. Since this lucky guy will be getting this truck on Christmas Day. What would be the best thing to do as far as break in? I really would like to be their to teach him how to but at the same time its not good to break them in in those temps (its freezing cold here at x-mass time. But if I am to break it in now for him he would be able to run it once he gets and wont have to wait for warmer weather. Suggestions!!!!! :?:

@ motas Yes everything! I want him to do what he likes with it. the only upgrades that will be done when he gets it will be the steering post bearings that I put in. and the Axial .28 mill that has not been completely decided yet but is the most like culprit. I am relying on you all to give him the advise he will need to turn it into his dream build. I will be their to help as well. 😀

@ 88gtanotchback yes it turned out very clean! A new lid w/new tires and rims is about all that could have made it cleaner. Ascender has donated new bumpers since the idiot that had it before spray painted them chrome. It may be hard to tell (I did a ton of scrubbing) but look close

@ Pearl Do you think he will join Savage Central once he gets the Savage and reads this thread? We hope so, I know the guys want to help out and see this truck in action. Another note here are some pics I took of the fleet. His truck is identical to mine and the wifes.

(groundskygroundagain)
As a suggestion if he's gonna do any hard bashing/jumping then get him to add an external reinforcement between the bottom left screw and the r/h motor mounting plate screw as it's below that screw that it shears on this version of the TVP's. A plate on the outside would help it last.

Cheers

(Nitromite)
good Idea! i think you are the original one to mention this week point. once i found out what you were talking about I threw some old .25 TVP's in the box for him just in case. I will recommend he gets newer X TVPs and X engine plates. they can be picked up very cheap from one of you guys who have upgraded or off EBay. I will also mention reinforcing That area as well.

OK I got the break in process started, the first two tanks have been ran threw at idle. Temps maintained at a very nice even temp. I have to say the Spec 2 has a very tight pinch, I mean dag gone I was afraid I was going to break the pull starter at first.lol

(Lady-Pearl)
Looks and sounds good! Your awesome but Don't be breaking anything lmao Exclamation !!

(Nitromite)
lol I wont, I don't want to get it dirty, then Id have to do all the cleaning again Confused so no high speed runs for this mill till its opened on x-mass.
next will be 3-4 tanks driving in a circle @ 1/4 throttle on and off the gas maintaining temps around 175-190. once that is done I want to hear it shift into second gear. Then it will be packed up for the big day Very Happy

i had to lean it out 1-1/2 turns to get it up near 200 for a good break in temp. not a problem just means it was pig rich from the factory
