Hey Everyone! Just registered to the thread! So I have an Original Savage 21 that has been sitting dormant for about 10 years that I want to get going again. My brother is big into the electric line of trucks so it will help us become closer in having the mutual hobby :)

So my basic questions I want to ask are what upgraded engines are compatable with the original 21 . I’ve been looking at the HoBao Mac28 and the Dynamite .28 and “Big Red” just as starters ..(Id like to have something compatible with the rotostart,if possible ..
I want some more power than the original 21 and plus my one heat sink head hole is stripped out so it doesn’t get the compression it needs to start,
Very interested in the HoBAo 28. It says it’s a upgrade for most 1/8 scale monsters but I don’t want to buy it and end up not fitting !

Also parts are pretty slim for the Original 21 , what other Savage models (if any) will bolt up/ interchange with my 21

thank you

With Some TLC and a new motor and driver side Dogbone I’ll be back ripping in no time .. forgot how awesome these machines are .. 11 years was far to long!

That's a clean looking Savage 21 for it's age ! All the .28 to .32 engine will be a direct bolt it to your Savage 21 . The issue I can't completely answer is the Rotostart compatibility. I have a Dynamite .28 and I do know the rotostart housing will bolt on, but i'm not 100% sure that the rotostart's internal 12mm one way bearing hex will work with the the Dynamite .28 hopefully another member can chime in. The only suggestion I have is your original Savage 21 uses a 2 shoe clutch , you will definitely want to swap over to a Savage 25 or later 3 shoe setup otherwise you will quickly smoke a 2 shoe clutch with the newer higher hp .28+ engines.

Yea it sat in an attic for 9 years and then basically in my “man cave “ for the last 3.5 years lol! Awesome yes I planned on getting a .28 motor .. another member mentioned the Force line of motors .. looking into them right now
Yes I was going to upgrade to atleast a 3 shoe ... I’m patiently waiting for Exedys parts to hopefully launch in May2021 is what it says !

Polar_Bus would this clutch setup
Work for the Force28 engine .. I believe that’s the motor I’m going to end up going with .!

No. You have to run the Savage 3 shoe flywheel only. The reason is that the Savage FW is a very short design. You also need to only run HPI savage clutch bells. The Savage CB's are also "low profile". If you try to run a standard 1/8 Buggy flywheel or clutchbell these will add extra overall length and when assembled the clutchbell face can hit the spur gear and the gear mesh will be off center. Here's a pic. The Savage CB is on the left, and a standard Ofna 1/8 buggy CB on the right :

You can use most any type of aluminum or composite clutch shoe and spring on a Savage, but also only use a HPI Savage flywheel nut .

Ok Awesome ! Thank you for the clarification .. so only Savage clutchbell
And only savage flywheel and any 3 composite shoes and springs .. thank you! You are saving me some time and money and certainly aggravation lol ! Can I just use my stock flywheel and clutch bell then on the FORCE28 and just buy 3 shoes/springs .. that may be a silly question ..

I know these are salty ($$) but I guess I need to buy a flywheel with 3 shoes or what not as you said ... would these be the ticket? .. could I just use the clutch bell that’s on my 21 if it came down to it ..

Thank You Polar_Bus you’ve been a great help , I’ve never really dove into hopping up the engine before so it’s all kind of new to me .. I will send pics when I get everything together ! Hopefully sooner than later :)
