Hey guy's I'm going to take my Axial 32 apart for AB mods today but I never took my Clutch shoes a part and back together. On a scale from 1-10 how hard is it being my first time. Is there a thread here on how to? Cheers!

You can also dowload the user guide..at the very bottom...maybe that will help a bit...i'm looking for a video now that i saw..but the guy was using a different tool... I'll post it as soon as i find it...

the first two shoes are a 3 and the last one is a 6. Its always the hardest. But with that tool it might make life a lot easier for you.

I have been changing clutch shoes with my little flat screwdriver and have had no problems. That Duratrax tool looks pretty neat, but it seems so easy with a screwdriver, IDK if I'd ever buy it.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I would maybe give this job a 3...

LOL! I didn't even know how these springs worked when I bought my new shoes yesterday. I had a bearing failure up front, and I had to pull the bell anyway. My shoes were about shot, so, I got a new set of stockers. Once I saw the old shoes, I knew it right away.

I rate it a 2, because that last shoe can be a pain if you're holding the engine AND putting it on at the same time. My friend held the motor while I did the installation, made it VERY easy. I didn't have any special tools, just a really small flathead with a small groove in the center for pushing spring wires in place. 🙂

Good luck with it, I'll say this, new shoes really show when you're old ones were burnt up! 🙂

Ive always used a screwdriver until recently. To get my last order to $150 and get $25 off I ordered some tools. That clutch tool and a header spring tool. I cant belive I didnt use them beffore. Both tools make the job a lot easier. It took me two shoes to get the hang of how the tool works. Once I got the nack, I love it. Never use a screwdriver again.

I hate to go off topic but can you show us that tool for the header spring Grumpy?
I have seen the clutch tool and it looks worth it but I'm curious on the header spring one now too.

I gotta say, that's pretty cool. You know what though. My tuning driver does it great. It's the same tool I use on the clutch springs, manifold spring.. It works great. I just dremeled a small notch into the middle of the blade.

I spent 17 bucks on this screw driver back in 2000, and it's NEVER failed me. I use it for any flathead application. Probably the best 17 dollar tool I've bought. It was super hardened tungsten steel. Made by craftsman special tools. 🙂 I don't think they carry them anymore, as I can't find it anywhere. I'll snap a picture of it when my dad brings my camera! 🙂

Also, I was thinking of ditching the spring on the manifold totally and changing to a bolt/nut combo. That way it's always tight, and it doesn't have that stupid spring wrapped around the block. I always hated springs lol. Springs are for shocks, not for exausts! 🙂

I just use the tuning driver aswell except I haven't even notched it. I haven't had enough of a problem without to worry about adding it. I am usually a firm believer in using the right tool for the job to get the best results but this one for me doesn't really qualify. Atleast until I start having problems getting the desired results with what I have laying around.

I used a screwdriver for years. Never thoght about this tool. I just got it because it was basicly free with the discount. After using it, I wish I would have bought it way sooner. The hook is small and really grabs the spring. You can easily twist or manipulate the spring without it sliding. I have had a spring pop off the screwdriver and embed in my finger. No chance of that with this tool. The hook is smaller than it looks on the picture. When using a pic the pic is too big and doesnt leave much spring lip to hook in the exhaust. This tool leaves plenty. I know there are a lot of other ways to instal shoes and header springs, but these two tools will make it a lot easier. Trust me.
