Hi Guys,
First off I am a complete newbie to Nitro and RC cars. I have been reading this site for a little while and have found it a great help but this is my first post. I have an understanding of motors and air, fuel and spark ect but am sure I have a learning curve ahead getting my own car running nicely. I have a HPI Savage X 4.6 and I wanted to start with either 20% or 25% fuel to try make my life easier when tuning. My local shop only had 16% and said I would be fine... I got 2 bottles, have not tried to run it yet but want to get some opinions. I am trying to make things as easy as possible for me to get it running and start tuning. Is 16% going to be noticibly harder to learn all this? Should I return it and get higher % nitro?

Also a side note: how often should diffs be oiled.

Many Thanks!

You be ok wi the 16% if that’s all you av but get the 25 % maybe use 1 bottle n return other fo swops were are you based ? N is ya savage new or used ? Regarding diff maintenance

Cheers Vinni, I am based in South Australia. Savage is old but seems to be in decent condition. I thought it was a 2 speed also but apparently not

I haven't got it running yet but I will. I'm going to put a roto start on before I even bother with a pull start. I took it down to a hobby shop here and the owner looked at it. Said it was even purchased there many years ago and said it was only a single speed.

Many people do run 16% and it is usually available.

However, before you commit to buying a large quantity of it, you should probably find out what nitro percentage the previous owner used with this engine.

The reason I suggest this, is because nitro engines shouldn't run on a lower nitro content fuel than the fuel they've been tuned and run-in on.

Think of it as a Nitro engine rule: You can change up in nitro, but not down.

Changing down to a lower nitro content will not only inherently result in lower performance, but crucially, less heat for any given tune, which due to the metallurgy and design of ABC engine design can lead to blow-by.

In the US, many people run 30% nitro, which is the race standard nitro limit.

In the UK, 25% is the race standard nitro limit for BRCA affiliated racing.

An important consideration is the oil content. If you want some safety, pick a fuel with a slightly higher oil content as this affords some extra protection from a lean run.

I've been using Opti Fuel Race 25% nitro with my rigs and it's been very good.

Diffs can leak - they need maintenance when they do - basically topping up as the silicone leaves them. There's no set length of time.
