Hey folks, nice site and lots of good reading here. I have been reading the forums for a few days. Havnt tried much of it yet but wanted some of your thoughts.
I bought a 4.6RtR a few days ago. Now the hobby shop didnt have any temp gun but they told me just to fire the sucker up and let it idle thru the first tank of fuel and then it would be broke in. So after an hour of trying to get it to stay going it burnt the tank of fuel. I then did a tank of riding around in circles at about half throttle just to be safe seeing the shop didnt know much.
I had to lean out the lsn 1/8 and I also leaned out the hsn 1/8. Now the truck starts and will run but shuts off if I stop her most of the time. But while she is running she is soaking the ground with fuel. I can get a few minutes and the tank is empty. She has very little power taking off and only bogs at top end. Its gotta be way to rich.
The only time I get major power is when I roll her over and say it takes me 15-30 seconds to retrieve her. If I catch it before it shuts off and puts it back on its wheels for another 10-15 seconds it lives up to its name as a savage and tears off. Also when the tank goes empty she tears off bat outta hell for a few seconds.
So I guess I should lean her out more on the lsn and the hsn? The idle isnt too bad and it is at 1mm gap in the carb. Thxs guys. Now I gotta go hack a hole in the windshield and side windows for better airflow.

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your new Savy, you will have a lot of fun with it. Continue to lean out the HSN about an 1/8th turn at a time until you get the performance you desire. Just make sure you continue to have good smoke coming out of the pipe when running at wide open throttle. If idle is good and you have a good take off from idle, you shouldn't have to mess with the lsn much. When you tune it, keep it a little on the rich side at a full tank. Savy's experience a half tank lean, you are seeing a little of that when your tank is almost empty. Good luck and have fun! If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask anyone.

This is a great thread to use. It has a lot of how-to's and will explain the half tank lean and other issues. Hope this helps you out. https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4161

there is a break in section in your hpi users manual. prolly shoudl of read that before you went tearing around. its supposed to idle for 1-2 tanks, 1/4 throttle for 2 tanks, 1/2 throttle for 2 tanks, and 1 tank of 1/2 to full throttle blips. at least I'm pretty sure thats how it went.

thxs

Ya I got the display model truck, last one in the store and the manual wasnt there. I got a copy off a friend after the matter. But break in is sortof done . I know I could run a few more tanks thru it now to help her. The store I bought it off didnt have many answers or advice to give me. I guess they just wanted the money. Thxs for the advice Allan and the link. I have been reading thru that aswell. I'm waiting for the igniter to charge then I will be trying her again. I;ll post back results.

well

Well I have the lsn and hsn in (lean) 1/4 turn. Its a little bit better but still slow taking off and bogs all the way thru. Still smoking alot, but she is only losing a small amount of fuel now. I have to try again later. Gotta give the neighbours a break. Any laws against these noisy little buggers distrubing the neighbours?

I have a new savage too, and I gotta say the factory settings are really rich.
just keep leaning out the hsn untill you get good shifts and good topspeed without bogging or cutting out. then richen and 1/8th for tank lean and safety.
then start on your lsn, go 1/16th at a time tho. it seems this mill is touchy on the lsn. you will get better and better takeoffs as you lean. you can also do the pinch test for the lsn. run a couple passes to clear the motor then pinch the fuel line going to the carb and count how many seconds it takes to die.
it should be around 3 seconds, with a small bump in rpms as it dies.
once that is all set take a temp reading and readjust if you need to to keep the temps down.

Keep leaning you HSN until you engine will be around 200F-210F. Since you already have done the idle tank, go through one tank at 1/4 blips. Like go 1/4 for 3 seconds, then go to idle. Once your down that, do the same thing again with 1/2 throttle. Then next tank do it with 3/4 throttle. And then last go WOT (Wide Open Throttle) for a couple seconds then go to idle. Make sure you let it cool with the piston at BTC (Bottom Dead Centre) between EACH tank during break in.

Here are some tips just to help you out:

Do break in with the body off
Go to a real big area for break in if you cant get to higher speeds during the later part of break in.

Well I got her running at about 250 degrees. Kinda hot, it still smokes but its tuned now that it cant take off good atall. It just wheelies up and over. You gotta feather the throttle to it until it gets moving fast.

I know its AWSOME isn't it?:hardlaugh: LOL Wait when u hear what the Axial 32 can do. Just mount some wings on her and watch it GOOOOOOO!! Cheers!

250 isn't bad at all. I believe though that 270 is the point where you should be careful and richen up a bit.

Thxs for the help guys. Ya its name was a good one. Savage. woohoo. Now whats this I here about another engine? axial 32 you say. hmmm. lol. Ya its fun trying to keep it on the ground now. I love it. Gonna take it too a local skate park and do a few jumps later today.

I remember when mine first got tuned and running right. What a blast that was after the lame break-in speeds and power.

250 is about perfect. Mine performs the best between 240 and 280.
