Ok, so I have run about 1.5 gallons of fuel through my savage x 4.6 and I lost a grub screw. :duh: I got the replacement parts and got that fixed. While I had some down time I figure this is a good time to change the diff grease. I took out the rear differential and unscrewed the four diff cup screws. but the thing is being a PIA to get the two parts apart. My question is, do I need to really try to pull the gear away from the cup? Should I be able to pull them apart by hand or do I need to really force it? Am I missing something? I don't want to force it. I know that is when things break. Also, my LHS said that bearing grease would be fine for inside the Diffs. I am not too sure about that because I have not seen any threads that say its ok.

yes, just tug the drive gear off the cup.

I would use diff fluid in the case and grease on the outside

check the diffs for side to side play now also.

you may have to shim the pinion or drive gear slightly

Here is a link to the diff shimming that Crash talked about.

If you have any questions on shimming the diff or pinion just ask.

You can use grease inside the diffs and it will not hurt anything, but using different weights of silicon diff fluid can really change the handling characteristics of your truck. Different people use different weights of oil to meet their driving needs and desires. Again, if you have question feel free to ask
