Wanted to start a new thread on my new to me Savage.
A friend gave this truck to me for basically free.
It was beaten and neglected, and sitting for years. And filthy.
My first HPI! I've owned many RCs, I have about ten electrics currently but this is my only nitro at the moment.
I've owned one other nitro but never really got into it so I'm gonna need tuning advice when the time comes.

I'm mostly done now and took some pics along the way.

The first thing I did was pull the shocks.
The dual-stage shocks seem pointless to me on a basher.
The little collar divider thing between the springs rubs on the shock bodies and scratches them all up.
Shock upgrade is gonna be in the future.
I found by flipping the springs so the collars are on the bottom (short spring on bottom) it frees up the movement. Hopefully the springs stay on haha.
Noticed the shock shafts were bent so I replaced those.
More interesting is that the springs are also bent up. If this wasn't a basher theyd be replaced for sure.

Did the V2 17mm hub and super HD axle conversion
Next I picked up some alum hubs, didn't love the plastic
Had a set of 17mm hubs laying around so I use those and drilled out the 2.5mm hole for a standard 3.0mm pin
Boggles my mind that HPI uses a smaller axle pin on this heavy trucks.
Also I'll be running the huge tires seen in the first pic background.

Clutch springs were all broken?!?!
Installed new set of springs and shoes.

New engine mount and plate. Old one was cracked.
Used some new hardware in places.
Eventually might replace all of the Phillips screws ...

Hinge pin holders were slightly bent.
Not a huge fan of the orange, would like to get a silver engine plate and skids later to get rid of all orange.

Picked up the innovative holders and top brace.
I missed the part that the top brace didn't fit the X, so I just ground them down a bit so they do, and more snug now. These are half a mm thicker too and a better aluminum so hopefully bending is a thing of the past.
Also using longer screws and converting to hex head where I can...

Front and rear alum hubs

Also noticed my clutch bell is 18T
And a 47t steel spur.

I'm concerned I'll burn up the engine pushing these much larger heavier tires. stock on left for comparison.

Thoughts?

I figured since half of mine were bent anyway why not get thicker ones the color I wanted. it's a win win. 👍

Shouldn't burn up the engine. Might use up the clutch shoes faster. Will probably need to change shift points in the trans.

Thanks for your input!
I have yet to touch the gearbox, I'm a bit afraid at what I'll find if I open it but I probably should and could replace the bearings, it's the only place I haven't yet.

I noticed one brake disk appears to be chewed up and one is red. Not sure what is going on there. I picked up a new set of red discs, haven't looked into replacing them yet, not sure what work is needed to swap those out yet.

Tonight finally got into the gearbox.
Cleaned up most of the rust etc
New brake pads and bearings. Added shims to eliminate most slop on the outdrive and spur shafts.
The plastic two speed gears looked ok so I didn't take that cluster apart. Scrubbed the plastic gears and they cleaned up nicely and had no damage so I was happy.
