My box mod is a bit different than most:
Because SMC batteries have an odd location for their leads, I cut a nice big chunk out of the side for the wires. And with the batts pushed forward in the box, the lid couldn't close, so I just hacked the front of the lid off...
The wires are protected by the mass of the box, and the wood spacers added later means even the hardest hit to the rear of the truck can't move the batteries enough to hurt the wires.
