Firstly Hi all i just bought a savage x with a spur gear problem. Just worn out really have found the cause (broken engine mount bolt)

It has factory setup with a 49 tooth spur gear. I was looking to change it to a meatal one. What do you all reccomend and if it has a different number of teeth will it still mesh to the clutch bell without a problem or do i need to change that in accordance also. Many thanks

First of all, Welcome to the forum.
A basic regular set up would be 47 spur / 17 cb.
You don't always need a metal spur, as long as you have a racing clutch bell and the proper mesh your good. In your case your motor mount screw was broke. When you get the time also put some blue loctite on the 8 screws 4 holding the engine to the mount and the 4 holding the mount to the engine plate.

hope some of this helped

Thanks for the reply. It still has the standard clutch bell i belive why do you reccomend changing the clucth bell that is already metal to a racing one and not upgrading the spur gear? Just interested and wanting to learn more 😉

I have already ordered a new set of screwes and a new mount

Welcome to the forum. I agree with shark on the spur n CB. A plastic spur gear can and will last as long as a metal one when meashed right and your CB don't get to hot that it melts it. I run both metal CB spur as well as the stock plastic spur. Just a personal preference. And yes a different tooth count will need adjusted accordingly.

thanks for all the useful info. With the vented clutch bell does it not get more dirt and stuff in the clutch faster?

Yeah sands the only thing I've ever had get in mine but I'm also running full out paddle tires in fine sand at dunes and the front tires fling sand all over it with the slightest turn. The rpms are down when turning around so maybe that's reason why sand has gotten in the CB at the dunes. But other than that I've never got anything in the CB.

I'm having the same problem, hot clutch bell melting my spur gear. what gearing ratio would be recomended for off road bashing, should i stick to 47/17. i like the idea of getting a racing clutch bell and obviously i need a new spur. so i want to get it right if I'm gonna spend some £'s . cheers guys

What clutch shoes you running? If aluminum ones check them see if they are burred if so either file them back smooth or replace them. Might be slipping causing the CB to over heat. I run the Robinson racing CB and metal spur gear combo on a few of my trucks. 16/48 gives it a Lil more grunt but still nice top end.

The Teflon ones it comes with seem to gold up petty good as far as getting burred edges I dnt think they do that. But they might be slipping causing the over heating. What do you usually run on? If it has a lot grip with minimum tire spin it will heat up the CB aswell. Hope these ideas help you trouble shoot it.

its a bmx bike track on a mud base covered in grit, like to run on grass also. i checked the pads there in good condition very little wear on them, but they are very very smooth, i don't know if they should be or not.

Cool I want to run mine on a BMx track. The pads should be smooth no roughness to them or no build up on them. The CB might be getting hot as in the typical temperature. They run a tad got regularely. Only can tell its to hot when it melts the spur gear. So don't know exactly why yours would be runing so hot of everything is checking out.
