Is this literally a drop in engine for an xl?

or will I need to buy anything else along with it to make it work?

I'm not liking my 5.9 to much right about now.

Yes it will drop right in, nice choice rockout
Might need to shim your diffs, when I got mine my diffs didn't survive. It was time for an upgrade anyway, still had the old plastic diff cups and 2 spyder gears.

Of course you will need to transfer your clutch, airfilter, engine mount.

yep its direct drop in .. and a monster of a mill for a none modded mill.. it screams ...easy to tune and runs great ... nice choice .... good luck...
