Hello all, I have a savage xl k5.9 and a hpi pulse k4.6, my question is, how easy is it to stick the 4.6 engine into the savage XL chassis?
I've given up on the original k5.9 engine that's another story.

It should fit right in.
The engine mount plate that attaches to the transmission is the same regardless of chassis size.
The center rear drive shaft is longer on the XL to accommodate the extra length.

I was dubious, with the exhaust and carb being on the opposite side of the engine on the Pulse, thanks 👍🏼

You can just pull the carb off and flip it 180 degrees (slide & uniball linkage to the left) and route the exhaust over to the right side instead of the left.
Easy as 1,2,3.
Along with the carb angle, you may have to adjust the uniball, I don't know how it sits/fits in the Pulse.
Use the 5.9 setup as your template.

Quick update on putting the engine in, the flywheel housing sits further out on the 4.6, which leaves the clutch bell barely touching the spur gear.
The only idea I've had is make the engine mount holes on the chassis bigger to make it sit back more.
I really don't want to be messing about trying to take both flywheels off..

Am I correct in my guess that you pulled the 4.6 from the Pulse and installed it into the Savage without swapping flywheels?
Cuz that don't look like the Savage flywheel.

"I really don't want to be messing about trying to take both flywheels off.."

If that's the case, you are best off swapping the flywheels.
Get yourself one of these - clutch spring tool - it will make your life easier.

Either of these would help - clutch wrench - piston lock tool
I lived with only the piston lock tool for many years - just doesn't work with a turbo button.
Between the spring tool and piston lock, you should be spending less than $30.00.
Money well spent.

Yeah so this is the 1st time I've actually swapped a nitro engine over and thought the k4.6 would be identical to the 5.9 with same flyweel and everything, I have ordered a piston lock tool and a flywheel puller, the clutch spring tool looks perfect too as I'm looking at the clutch shoes with anxiety 😂
Thanks for your help. 👍🏼

As someone who has spent at least an hour unsuccessfully trying to install a set of clutch shoes without the clutch spring tool, it's a godsend.

"thought the k4.6 would be identical to the 5.9 with same flyweel"
The flywheel in your pic looked like it came off a buggy.
That's not to say that it's impossible for you to adapt it to work with the Savage (a shorter collet perhaps), but even then, ya gotta yank and reinstall the shoes.

The only out that I can think of for you to keep the current flywheel in place and not have to remove/reinstall shoes would be if you (let's say) have multiple shims under the clutch-bell and can pull a shim or shims from under the clutch-bell and place it/them on top and closer to the spur gear.
That would effectively move the clutch-bell (and its gear) back and closer to the engine.

It's the flywheels, not the engines.
For all practical purposes, the two engines are more or less identical in how each would fit into your Savage.
I'm willing to bet that you would have the same situation as you do now (with the engine with the buggy flywheel) if you swapped the flywheel arrangements between them.

I have turned the carb around, swapped engine mounts over too 😅
Making progress!

I've ordered a clutch wrench, that should help out alot 👍🏼
What do you mean when you say I'd be in the same situation if I swapped them around? 🤔 Or am I overthinking this?

I apologize for my lack of eloquence or clarity...
Here's how I see your current situation - so if I'm wrong, please help me reset.
You pulled the 5.9 from the Savage (where it I assume the clutch-bell gear and spur gear aligned to your satisfaction).

You pulled the 4.6 from the Pulse and installed it straight into the Savage.
No flywheel or shim changes - maybe the clutch-bell - but that's moot.
Your pic reflects that result.

What I meant is that if you pull everything collet/flywheel/shims off the 5.9 and pulled everything collet/flywheel/shims off the 4.6 and swapped arrangements; the engine wearing the buggy flywheel (in this case now the 5.9); you would have things lining up just like in your 4.6 pic.

Aside from turning the carb around, and swapping engine mounts, yeah I then put the 4.6 into the savage, to find the flywheel is sticking out more, so that's where I am with it.
Once the clutch removal tool comes, it's a case of swapping the flywheels over and all SHOULD be good 😊

You probably already have the tools to strip the engines of the whole enchilada (clutch-bell to collet).

I use a small screwdriver to provide leverage to gently pry (up from the bottom) and assist in the clutch shoe removal.
I've also found that a Hudy spring tool (HUD107612) can assist in accomplishing said task (pulling up on the spring from behind the shoe).
You may already have one to deal with your exhaust springs.

I've used a clutch spring toll for installation - not removal - but that's not to say it won't work - and while the flywheel puller is nice - strategic taps with a small hammer (sometimes a punch too) have so far worked for my needs.

Since you already got one on order and given how tight your flywheel looks to back up to the case - just wait for the flywheel puller to arrive to remove the flywheel.

I've found that a slim bladed knife/razor blade helps to remove the collet.
It doesn't take much movement to widen the collet slit just enough to facilitate sliding/pulling it off.

Quick update, the 4.6 is now in the XL chassis, she doesn't shift to 2nd gear so that's the next thing to sort out 😁 😜
