Well I had a brand new 5 cell stick pack get a wire cut. So I repaired the wire but I didn't have shrink wrap to re-cover the battery. So I decided to mod my DX3R with it instead of going to get wrap.
For this mod you need a 5 cell stick pack, soldering iron and solder, # 0 Phillips screw driver, small shrink wrap, and some sort of foam.
Start by removing all the screws in the TX and its rubber handle. Split the TX half's to remove the battery tray. Note: I did not fully split the TX. I only split the lower half but the wires have NO slack and are very fine and could cut easily So use caution.
The tray rests in a track and simply slides out. De-solder or cut the wires to free it fully from the TX.
I took a female wire jack from a old I/O switch I had laying around.
Strip and tin the leads on the connector. I chose not to tin the TX's leads as they are fine as hair and did not want or need to over heat them.
lost this photo sorry.. .
Next, I placed my heat shrink over the leads about to be soldered. I normally figure out I forgot this step just after I solder them lol.
Solder the connections to the TX switch.
Note: I again chose to solder to the original leads and not the board itself because I still have a warranty and need to be able to restore this if it needs to be serviced or replaced.
Time to use the heat shrink we remembered to put on before we soldered.
Well its all wired up now. But it needs a strain relief of some sort to hold the wires from getting ripped off the board should a monkey pull out the pack.
Note: I would normally use hot glue here as its removable for the warranty issues again. So I searched for a half hour before a remembered using the last stick.:duh:. CA it is...
Edit--> Ill re shoot this pic soon sorry for the blur
Now that it cant get ripped out its time to make a holder for the pack. I used foam to get this done. Special thanks to Dave from Buku here!!! He packs his pipes well. :resp: I used the foam from my pipe.
NOTE: this pack was near dead
So thats it! No more AA batteries to buy EVER again.
I will be adding LED back lighting for the LCD display with the added battery capacity. That thread to come.
I will do this with hump packs on the Dx2.0 for all those users with Jr or spectrum TX's soon! No foam needed for them. But cutting of the case required. No hiding it for warranty service!
