Tryed to start my savage ( Savage X 4.6 ) today. Turned over a couple times. Rotostart seemed to be jammed. The pin on the end of the rotostart had sheered off. Took the motor out and removed the rotostart backing plate. The small gear was broke in half. I am a newbee so I am not sure if there is a issue with the motor and that is what caused the gear to break. I turned the motor over by hand and it seems to be tight at the top of the stroke ( heat sink is off ). Any help would be much appreciated.

Probably flooded it, causing a hydrolock condition. Hopefully the roto broke and you didnt' bend your connecting rod.:Xfingers:

So are you saying you have the heat sink off and the button so you can see the top of the piston. If so the piston should get stiff at the top on a cold engine as this is the seal because these engins don't have rings but it is not real tight. If its very tight with the head button and heat sink removed check the walls. turn the engine over by hand so piston is at BDC (Bottom Dead Center) and check the walls in the sleave it should be smooth (absolutely) there may be some cross hatching but should be no up and down scratches if there are some heavy ones this is your problem and the engine is pasicly junk unless you want to replace the piston and sleeve. These up and down scratches could very well be in the piston as these pistons are very soft and are much softer than the sleeve. Next thing could be the bearings are junk. Anyway, I hope this helps a little.

Thanks Guys. Jason the cylinder wall looks smooth. I can not see any scratches. I was not sure if it should be tight at the top of the stroke but what you said makes sense. I will get a new gear and rotostart shaft and put it back together. Hope it runs lol .

Check your OWB too. If you broke the roto start plate there is a good chance the OWB broke too.

Hey alanr,
Loose the "sissy stick" and get your self a pull start. That way you can feel what the motor is doing and you don't have to lug that thing all over with you. Just my .02

Not a problem alanr. Its the one way bearing. Its on the shaft at the rear of the engine. The roto start plate turns the OWB which then turns the crankshaft. It there is too much stress when trying to start the engine the OWB will break. Take it off and look around the outside for any cracks. Also check the inside to make sure all the rollers are in place. Put it on the shaft and see if you can turn it by hand. It should grab in one direction and spin free in the other.
Hope that helps.
I replaced my roto with a pull start because I got tired of replacing OWB's and back plates. I also replaced the OWB with a modded one I read on here. With the pull start you can feel if the engine is flooded or binding for any reason. The roto doesnt offer any forgiveness.
I cant find the original post about the OWB but this is the part I'm using http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...=m37&satitle=270210529781%09&category0=&fvi=1

Thanks Keithv. I will have a good look at the one way bearing. I had a look at the modded one. It looks like the way to go. I think I will look at getting a pull start. Like the idea of being able to feel what is going on.

:sport-smiley-026: These guys make alot of sense alanr.Sounds like they covered all bases, but if you stay with the rotostart ,make sure you use a fuel with a lower oil content, like HPI fuel or O'Donnel or similar, I used a fuel that is meant for high reving .18's. and the oil content wasted my one way bearing.I have also heard Others haveing the identical issues.Hope we have helped.Bye the way,Welcome to the site,If you are really a newbie , this is the greatest source of information and cameradery that you will ever find.WE understand the addiction.LOL
