Ok bear with me, I have a 4.6 that has been down a while and now that I'm putting it back together I have a small issue, I noticed that the sleeve is recessed into the block and that the shims on my head sit on the block which would allow the sleeve to move up and down during operation, I think, do I have the wrong shims? should they fit in the recess or is something else wrong?
any help is of course appreciated.

I believe those shims are supposed to be head gaskets to seal the head button, the head button is supposed to hold the sleeve down. Like Mickey said, pictures would help.

Nope, I have a 5 year old that thought my perfectly good camera would look great in the bath! I got it figured out though thanks, it was just a matter of tightening the bolts on the head then the shims did there job. The only reason I was concerned is because of how the motor blew (snapped crank at the pin on the lobe) and I thought maybe I had a compresion issue.
